Need tires for a Honda. Need car guys advice

Sorry for the noob question but I'm a motorcycle guy. I need a set of tires for a honda civic. With bikes I always ordered the tires online and take the wheels off and have some place mount em for a few bucks. That's by far the cheapest way to go. Just wondering how the car guys do it? You order em online? If so where? Who mounts them? Do you just drive into your local discount tire? Is there much savings in ordering online or is it just about the same cost to go to discount tire? Thanks for any advice.

I buy from Tire Rack and take them to a local Messican shop. I save at least $150-$200 since I have to special order my tires from any tire shop.

What year?

Also any snow or major mud? Factory wheels and tire size?

For me I buy online and carry to wal-mart, sears, etc.. and have them installed.

But I have bought from treadepot.com, tires.com, and tirerack.com.

It's an 08 Honda civic 2 door. It's driven in Texas no snow or mud. It's my wife's car so performance takes a back seat to longevity. Factory wheels tire size p205/55 R16.

Here are some that have decent specs and ratings...

$68

$76

The first one is made by goodyear and has a good reviews. The 2nd one should last longer and also does ok, cost a little more.
Other tires have lowwer life ratings or are more performance rated. Also the 2 I linked are NOT directional so you can rotate them side to side and back to front as needed.

You think those are reliable tires? It's for my wife's car and I'm willing to pay more for tires if that means better reliability/quality. What about rotating and balancing the wheels? I usually just paid for a lifetime rotate/balance from discount tire.
Also how much can I expect to be raped for as far as mount/balance and tire disposal fees, etc..?

Yea those 2 should be ok. Teh first will probable handle a little better while the 2nd will probable last longer and may be a little more quiet.

With a car like a Civic you can have the tires put on at wal-mart; they are the cheapest I have found. I use sears for my 17"+ size tires for my Corvette, SiLs A4, etc...
Order the valve stems from eBay as well, that will save more money. I got 4 nice metal cover ones for $3 shipped.

Wal-mart offers a lifetime balance if you pay a little extra when they are installed if you need that. That may be a good deal or not depending on how you drive and the conditions of the roads in your area. I have about 20k on my front and the balance is still ok. I also rotate my own. Just up front put on stands jack up rear and then move the tires.

Here are the valve stems I got for my CTS, BiLs STS, and SiLs A4; and they look good and have worked fine.

i order online and take to a local place or walmart.

disposal varies by state. IL its 2.50

both those tires look good.

dont be afraid of kumho or sumitomo either, I've had great luck with them

Thanks. Good advice indeed. Is it necessary to change grommets out on tpms or is that just a scam to get more cash? Local guy says he can do a set of 4 goodyears mount and balanced for $366. Wonder how it's so low? I'm kinda leery thinking I might get a set of bad tires. Discount tire wants like $500 minimum.

Depends, goodyear makes good and awful tires. The goodyears that were on my CTS and my SiLs A4 were awful. Bad dry or wet it did not matter. If its a cheap goodyear, skip it.

I never did anythign to my TPMS valves on the Corvette when i changed my tires. If they are working and not leaking leave them be. If the civic has the TPMS then you do not need valve stems I linked to before. That and make sure you are not charged for them either. Sears tried to charge me for them on my Vette.

I usually check tirerack and discounttiredirect, as well as a few local places. I managed to get a pep boys buy 4 get 1 free special around thanksgiving that pretty much made it even out to the online sites for cost after both were mounted, but also includes road hazard, and lifetime balance/rotation.

I was told not to touch the TPMS unless it was an issue. I've had good luck reusing the valve stems as well. which means they dont need to F with the TPMS

So the tpms is actually the valve stem?

On my corvette and some others I have seen it is one piece. Here is a picture.

So unless it is leaking air or giving bad/no reading I leave them be.
The pictures that come up for "honda TPMS" seem to show the valve stem as part of the TPMS.

I went with Riken Raptors on the Maxima last time I replaced the tires. They are made by Michelin and are actually pretty good tires...and not overly expensive. I spent about $400 less than the Michelin tires I had on the car prior.

Purchased and installed at Discount Tire.

I would tend to lean towards Costco for tires/install. Only caveats are that they will not install tires that you bring them nor will they install a non-oem size (obviously not an issue for you).

I buy online at tire rack, then take them to a shop to get them mounted. Much easier if you have a spare set of wheels as you can just leave the old tires/wheels with the new tires and don't need to leave your car.

Okay I decided on the tires. I'm getting the Michelin primacy mxm4. I got the local discount tire to pricematch the lowest price I could find and I am getting them for $621 OTD installed with a lifetime rotation/balance and road hazard warranty. Anyone have experience with Michilin tires on cars? It's basically all I'll run on my motorcycles.

I have the Primacys on my Accord. I have roughly 60,000 miles on them and they've probably got another 20,000 left, easy. This is with a commute that is all high-speed corners, so they get a lot more wear than your average commute. They are probably the best passenger car tire. Quiet, good ride, predictable at the limit, last forever, usable in snow. Max grip is fine when you consider the treadwear rating. I run extra air pressure to even out the treadwear since I tend to chew the crap out of the edges with all those corners. Anyway I'll buy another set when this one finally wears out.
