Need tips on shipping a bottle of wine

I bought a bottle of wine for some friends while I was away for the weekend. I need to ship it from Wisconsin to Utah. Are there any packing supplies made specifically for this? If it doesn't make it there in 1 piece, it will have been a big waste of money.

Another question. Is it legal? Am I going to run into laws that will prevent the bottle from getting there if I ship usps? Should I go Fedex or UPS instead?

Thanks for the help. I guess if nothing is made specifically for this, I guess I'll pack it really well with newspaper and packing peanuts.

AFAIK Utah has nazi-like laws on the importation of alcohol. Better check first.

Also just make sure there's adequate padding like any fragile object and you should be fine.

Is there anything remarkably special about this wine that you have to send this particular bottle? Shipping cost will likely be as much as it cost to buy the bottle anyhow.

As far as I know it is not legal to send booze in the mail.

USPS probably has rules against it, but I'm sure there are carriers that will take it.

Fedex, Airborne, etc.

I hope shipping isn't ~$80. 😀

Have fun reading this.

I think you shouldn't legally.

I saw on TV where many wineries hate that law because many people fly and they cannot buy a case of wine to take back with them and the law won't allow them to ship it either.

But if you did, foam from disk drive packaging would be enough if place in a box.

That's like saying USPS probably won't take pirated software but FedEx will.

Utah state law prohibits shipment of alcohol AFAIK.

I wasn't specifically talking about Utah, or any state laws - Obviously the carrier couldn't violate that, but I don't believe USPS will carry liquor to any state.

There are carriers that will, however, if there weren't mail order liquor wouldn't be possible.

According to this I was correct, USPS won't ship alcohol & Fedex may not either

I was going to put it in my suit case to take to them when we fly out there, but I didn't trust the airlines. Hmm...

Hey I flew post 9/11 with liquor in my carry-on bag. The guy at the scanner looked at me and told me to have a great flight. And to share. 😀

I flew back from DC with a 1L bottle of Bombay Sapphire in my suitcase.

Nobody cared.

Oh, I was also underage at the time.

According to Utah State Law 32A-12-503: It is unlawful for any...person, to ship or transport or cause to be transported into this state or from one place to another within this state any alcoholic product. This is a class B misdemeanor punishable up to a $1,000 fine and/or six months in jail.
