It's that box, but only if your graphics card can handle it. Also check Display Properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop -> Web Make sure the "Lock desktop items" is unchecked.

Another potential fix: If Windows Picture and Fax Viewer isn't working either: go to the command prompt and type in "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll" without the quotes.

Check out my screenshot

You can also right click the desktop > arrange icons by > if lock web items on desktop is checked then click on it to deselect it. Your desktop should refresh and they'll be transparent.

If that does not work, turn off your active desktop.
[*]right click your desktop > properties > go to the "desktop" tab > click "customize desktop" > click on the Web tab and uncheck everything > ok > apply

As a last resort look to see if this DWORD is in the registry. If so set it to 1 then restart the computer:
[*]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoActiveDesktop

I tried everything.

Still no go.

This sucks cause i am computer literate and it seems like such an easy fix.

Maybe the had malware or something that infected it?

Haha. You guys make this so difficult. Right click My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced Tab -> Settings under Performance -> Check the box marked "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop". Wallah.

For years, I have used Microangelo software to create, manage and control all my icons and related things. There is a sub-program call Microangelo OnDisplay which has a very simple checkbox for transparent icon label backgrounds.
