Need the best peripherals

There is only one dual-optical mouse that I've heard of. (Logitech Dual-Optical). Logitec doesn't make mice well, but it's ahead of other optical technology for sure. I still recomment the regular old ball-type Intellimouse Pro, but they went out of production a loooong time ago.
You will NOT want the best NIC. Believe me, it will be THOUSANDS compared to FREE for a normal good one.
The Internet Keyboard Pro is VERY convienient (The USB ports are great, and gamers like that it doesn't have the Natural KB's split-keys or the Office KB's funky screwed up key layout)
They may not be digital, but it's nearly unanimous for best speakers: Klipsch Promedia 5.1
Webcam? HA HA HA HA HA! NO webcam is acceptable. Get a video capture card (ATI All-In-Wonder or nVidia Personal Cinema w/ ViVo will do that too) and a nice digital camera with video out. Or a regular VHS camcorder w/ video out 🙂

I think you mean Microsoft since Logitech is the no.1 mice manufacturer & known for making high quality mice, their RMA is much lower then Microsofts,getting back on topic I think the Logitech Dual Optical is excellent for gaming,and NIC wise something like a good cheap Netgear FA311 or FA312 that do 10/100 Mbps will serve you well.

Keyboard wise it`s down to personal taste but one with built-in USB ports and Internet short-cuts is ideal so look at the Microsoft/Logitech range.

Speaker wise it`s all down to hearing but another good choice is the VideoLogic DigiTheatre DTS.

OMG! Do you realize WHY they are #1? The same reason AOL is! They flood the market with low-quality crap AND all the "Acer, "Hewlett Packard," "Compaq," etc two button "generic" mice are the EXACT SAME LOGITECH ONE. I have owned 5 Logitech mice and ALL of them have worn out in at most 2 months. ALL. I bought a MS mouse (Not wheel or anything special) in 1996 for my first computer to replace the Logitech one that came with it and it still works flawlessly. Now I have MS mice for all my computers and my friends have litterally been STEALING away Intellimouse Pros from me (I stocked up when they were $9.99 at Big Lots) to replace their Logitech Mousman, Logitech Wheel Mouse II, Compaq (Logitech) Wheel mouse, etc. About their RMA rate? Have you EVER tried to return anything? I have! They WILL NOT under ANY circumstances reply. I fought to get a number and they keep telling me that a bad USB adapter is a software problem! I finally got a tech to issue an replacement and it was backordered. They told me to wait and it's been a whole year. Screw them...

Sounds like user error to me, I owned a Logitech MouseMan Wheel (with ball) for nearly 4 years before it died, I replaced it with the optical version of the same model and it's been running great for over 6 months now.

NIC or ethernet card:

Anything tulip based is good and cheap, I like DE500s because they're older but still very good cards. Also anything from Intel or 3Com should be good.

Keyboard:

$10 POS or steal one from work always works for me =)

Without getting in to a flame war,all my friends have had Microsoft mice and have gone back to Logitech because they went faulty after a period of time,I`m not saying all Microsoft mice are bad ,but compared to Logitech their quality is lower,I`m still waiting for my first Logitech mouse to fail and don`t get me on how many Microsoft mice I can count that went faulty .


So lets beg to differ on this one ok and help the guy out with his thread question without starting a flame war.

With Logitech, it seems you get what you pay for. They make good stuff, and they make cheap stuff, but the prices are right on. www.justdeals.com has good deals on logitech stuff and refurbs.

For a keyboard I use an M$ natural corded (got it for $25), and a Logitech natural cordless with hotkeys (also dirt cheap). Having tendonitis, I really appreciate the natural keyboards. Anyone that does a lot of typing should have a natural (split) keyboard.

For Speakers; Logitech z-560 for 4.1, and Klipshe 5.1 for 5.1.

CZroe is right about the webcam issue, but it may change with USB2. Current webcams are fine for current video phone technology, but you wont get decent still pics, or video from them. There are a few good models of webcams if that's thier intended use... I'd look for ratings on them.

Either there is some sort of mis-use, misunderstanding, or he just happenned to hit the low ends of the Logitech faulty distribution curve, because I have yet heard one person choose MS mouse over Logitech, but of course there are a handful of them or how else would MS mice survive?

As for my personal experience, Logitech mice are always better -- peformance and reliability-wise, and often price. 🙂


Anway, back to the topic question. I think a good NIC is sufficient for most users' usage and they can be found for cheap prices at the FS/FT forum.

NIC or ethernet card: Shouldn't matter what you use. if you're going for quality 3com.
Keyboard: Microsoft, Natural Keyboard Pro or Office XP Keyboard.

I agree with all NeoMadHatter said except for the mouse, go with a intellimouse opitcal. I have loved mine and it has worked for 1 and a half years now, and I am a hardcore gamer. I don't have any bad experience with logitech mouses, I have just had good experience with MS mouses.

NIC or ethernet card: 3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI For Complete PC Management NIC (3C905C-TX) you just can't go wrong with it.
Keyboard: Microsoft, Natural Keyboard Pro or Office XP Keyboard.
Speakers: Creative SoundWorks DTT 2500
Webcam: haven't got one, can't recomend one
 
I have owned both Logitech and Microsoft mouses and never had a problem with any of them. Logitech mice do have a sturdier feel to them, though, and I like their contours better as well.

I've heard great things about the Logitech Dual Optical but never used it personally. Right now I am using the Intellimouse Explorer 3.0, though, and it has performed flawlessly even during the most frenetic FPS gaming sessions.

i only said that mouse because it's the only one that i know that fits what he wants. he said dual optical so i gave him dual optical. if it was for me. i'd take an intellimouse any day. actually looking to buy the intellimouse explorer 3.0 for myself.
 
Hmmm, for me (on my PC's)
Nic- Intel Pro 100's GREAT Nic, low CPU Usage (less than %2 at full load) NEVER a problem in EVERY chipset I've ever tried it in!
Nic for a PCI Mac- D-Link 530TX (regular old PC version) works fine, even with the onboard Ethernet Extensions and is CHEAP!
Keyboard - I'm using just a generic HMB (Acer) It's the Smallest 101-Key Natural Keyboard on the market (need valuable desk space)
Mouse - I LOVE the Intellimouse Explorer, but be warned I've RMA'd 3 in the last year and a 1/2. I hate my Logitec Mouseman Optical, but it's been working perfectly for 2 1/2 years.
Speakers - I dunno, never bought a set of PC Speakers. I use an old Mitsubishi 400watt Amplifier w/ a set of old JBL Control 5's.
Webcam - Couldn't tell you either, Mine was free, it's an IBM PC-Cam, it works fine!
