Need *technical* software help w/ doozy repair...

H'okay. So my father's last box basically committed seppuku (exactly what happened is something we're still trying to figure out...) and I'm left cleaning up the mess. There's plenty of that... and yet I feel like I'm soooooo close to making this crunkpile boot again that it almost physically hurts. That said, I'm still ankle deep in the Broken Windows Blues.

I need to be able to login to his machine, in its current form (or as close as possible), to deactivate a piece of software (photoshop cs3) because the company that makes it basically takes the uber-extreme-tinfoil-hat-wearing-conspiracy-theory-paranoia-rulez! approach to software piracy prevention. AFAIK they use a non-hidden rootkit with remote login / control capabilities to make sure that your photoshop is legit... but that's an Orwellian tale for another day...

For the record, this version of photoshop on his computer is quite legit. He has a license for 3 boxes and he now is trying to transfer one license from the deceased P.O.S. to the shiny new P.O.S. Yes, that can be done by calling adobe and going through all 7 levels of [expletive] and playing twister with the grim reaper, but I'm not gonna make him go through that if I don't have to. I'm stubborn and I (mostly) know what I'm doing. What I don't know, I seem to be miraculously good at guessing... so far...

Here's the prob. I've got a *.CHK file that needs to go somewhere (with, of course, a different name) to make this thing boot. The header of the file (it's text) is "[userprofiles]" (w/o quotes) and it's got a bunch of alphanumeric gobbledygook that looks to be *thoroughly* encrypted user profile info.

What's the *proper* name for this file (I'm smart enough to know that it definitely should *not* be named found0000.chk) and where does it go?

System is a --roughly 5yr old-- Dell Dimension 4600 which is almost back to running WinXP Home Ed again. I *think* it's SP2 but I really don't recall. Obviously, I can't login and Start > Control Panel > System to find out...

The PC doesn't boot at all? Or the owner can't log in?

If the owner can't log in, it sounds like his profile may have gotten trashed. Try logging in with another profile. If the PC won't boot at all, then you might want to do an XP Repair Install. That should make it bootable without losing data or programs.

The "found0000.chk" file is likely a file fragment recovered by a "chkdsk /f" operation. You don't see too many of those now that folks use mostly NTFS. The "found0000.chk" file is mostly like useless. It may have nothing to do with you latest woes at all.

Can't login, doesn't fully boot.

It gets to the point where it /should/ display a login screen and just sits there looking stupid. Looks like the "welcome" screen, but instead it says "Windows XP".

Chkdisk ran on that drive so many times that I'm surprised that it isn't *all* *.chk files by now... that thing was seriously hosed. That said... if I find a file or fragment that looks like a batch file, but /clearly/ is designed to set out login info for a user, I'm afraid that I'm forced to assume that the file is rather vitally important.

BTW, the XP install disk that came with this box didn't give me a repair option or (from what I could tell) even /try/ to detect prior versions that might need help.
