Furthermore, flashing with a 6970 bios will probably destroy the card. You need a modified 6950 bios. Read up on it.

That article was never updated after the research that was conducted in the discussion thread. Skim through the thread to see what was worked on after, especially that the 6970 BIOS's were damaging cards. Read this post: http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2137880#post2137880 . That script allows you to modify your original 6950 BIOS and only unlock the shaders.

Here's a report from Tom's Hardware based on their recent flash of an HD6950: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-hd-6950-unlock-build-a-pc-overclock,2893-5.html. Scroll to bottom of page. They confirm that modifying the bios is the way to do it, and that it won't work on 1GB cards.
