I've always been curious, if I buy a cable modem and since im with Rogers in Toronto, Canada, would it work with their cable? Like all i have to do is just plug the cable into the back of the cable modem.

Or is their cable modem special and u can only use theirs? I wanna cut the price down by not renting theirs and just buying a ca ble modem... but im not sure if just any cable modem is compatible wit their cable... can someone help me out?

A Cable modem has to be:

1. On the list of approved Modems by you ISP (if it is not they probably will not support you on any trouble what so ever).
2. It has to be External Ethernet Connected.

Once it meets the two criteria it can be the:

It DOES NOT matter brand.

Why it does not matter?

It does not matter because the average range of Cable Internet service speed is 1MHz to 3MHz, and the Modems are designed to carry well above 5MHz.

I just bought a Motorola Surfboard SB4200 with a $30 rebate and turned in the one I was renting for $3 a month. I've had zero problems with it so far. The SB3100 I had previously had no problems for the 2 years I ran it.

Performance wise your not likely going to see any kind of difference on cable modems.

The things you want to look for in deciding which one to buy:

Check out their website.. do they have alot of documentation on the modem, firmware upgrades etc?

Do they have an 800 # and what are there technical support hours? Call each one see how long it takes to answer.

Also check out the features of the modem.

The cable modems I have are the Toshiba and Linksys. I cant connect to my Toshibas to look at the settings and the cable frequencies etc.
But the Linksys I can.

Rogers cable does not use DOCSIS standard modems AFAIK (yet) so I don't think you can use an off-the-shelf one silentScope. Besides I think they have structured their pricing so the price you pay is all for the server and the modem rental is "waived", at least it used to be that way. I always thought it was because they couldn't charge you a rental on a piece of hardware without giving you the option to buy your own.
