Recently, my Mother-In-Law gave me her old (~1999) HP Pavilion 4535 system. It is pretty small, with just a single 5.25" bay for a DVD burner. It would be perfect for my grandparents, who have never had a system before, except for one thing:

It only has a Celeron 400 CPU. This thing is small - probably would take baby ATX, mini ATX, or whatever you would call it.

I can't seem to find much of anything about it online, but was wondering if anyone could suggest a replacement motherboard that might work in it, and that would let me go above 1 GHz CPU, at least.

No problem with the back of the machine - I can use a dremel tool to hack it out so that it fits there. Even if the mounting holes don't line up right, I can just mount it with a bunch of GE Silicone II so that it is secure, and electrically insulated.

My problem is in finding a compatible motherboard. I have no need to get to 3 or 4 GHz - just want to get to about 3X where it is at right now. (400 MHz Celeron) Thanks!

DVD burners in 1999? I think your the only burner in this story. For 1) It sounds like its a Flex board. 2) It will be proprietary. 3) It will need more power. 4) The hard drive isn't large enough to put XP on it. 5) It isn't worth the 10 dollars in dremal wheels you'd burn-up. Give it to them the way it is, or throw it in the garbage and buy you're Mom a decent little computer for 300 bucks(closeout). You can buy a P3 comp on ebay for $50 why would you spend more than that on that thing and it would look like a retard from the 40's found Howard Hughes supply of model glue ard started to piece together something he never seen before.
Damn boy someone had to say it.
Seriously save yourself more stress than you have already exerted on it and get rid of it.
Trying to peddel junk off on your MOm. Whats the world coming to.
