Need suggestions on OCing

here is my rig:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16ghz CPU
eVGA 750i SLI FTW motherboard
OCZ PC8000 4gig (2x2gb) RAM
Xigmatek HDT-S1283 heatsink + 120mm fan

so far I've got my CPU up to 1820mhzX9.5 @ 1.45v core and 1.3v FSB and my RAM is at 1000mhz @ 1.9v. idle temperature is 38 degree c

it boots to Windows XP SP3 fine, but it crashes as soon as I start Prime95. also, CPU-Z shows some weird numbers.... says 2700mhz instead of the 3.Xghz that it's supposed to be, and says the multiplier is set to 6X. i think it's showing just one core.

so what should I do at this point?

ye, try disabling speedstep/eist and come back Read the overclocking sticky while you are it

Hi,

CPU_Z routinely shows the wrong multiplier--just get out a calculator, divide by 2 and add the answer to what is showing on the screen. You have to collect several programs to get accurate readings of what's going on when you overclock. What processor are you trying to overclock? You might need to lower your VCore, don't play with the FSB voltage but gradually raise its numbers to 400 or more. Remember, multiplier times FSB equals CPU speed. I just overclocked an Intel E8400 Dual Core and it took a while to get it where I wanted it, but when I did it stayed on Prime 95 for 18 hours.

I just looked at your list of hardware, and you should be using far different numbers. Go to Google and ask "Overclocking Intel Core 2 Duo E8500?", you will find a number of forum locations where hard-core overclockers explain their techniques in detail. Good luck!

Thomas, CPU-z USUALLY displays the correct multiplier, I bet it does 99% of the time. It's speedstep/eist that you have to disable for the multiplier to stop changing. It has been stickied, you can read about it if you want.

that's whar's weird though.... speedstep IS disabled!

i did check out the oc stcky but it went right over my head... guess i'll check it out again

yep, exactly what i did before i touched anything. I can't even get it to 4ghz stable!

hmmm it first displays 4ghz and 9.5 multiplier... then like fluctuates... between 6 and 9.5...

system properties in windows show 4.08ghz

checked with prime95, says 4ghz too. seems like it's just CPU-Z that's showing the wrong information

Disable Speed Step AND C1E.

Cpu-z is correct. I have never seen it wrong.

btw, 1.45vcore will decrease the lifetime of your CPU considerably. most people wont push it up past 1.36, and 1.4 is kind of edgy. you can always just try it and see how long it lives, there are other people here running theirs up to that, but you shouldnt need that much voltage to get it stable at 4.3. try knocking it back to 1.36 and see what you can get it stable at with that voltage first.
