It's for an English Term paper, so anything with symbolism and an underlying theme is good, but most importantly an interesting book. Nothing too long (already made that mistake by choosing Atlas Shrugged in the beginning), pref. less then 300 pages.

Less than 300 pages? You're kidding right? Jeesh.

How about Curious George goes to the Circus.

How about anything by James Michener? ;)

But more seriously, Love Story by Erich Segal is a short novel which is pretty well known.

Well, I picked a fairly short book for my Senior Year in HS - "The Sound and the Fury" by William Faulkner. Plenty of symbolism. Just a little heavy. (Mistake but I got an "A".)

Try : "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemmingway. Short and symbolic. Deep. ("Moby Dick" is too long but a whale of a tale.}

What kind of books do you like?

I found "A Man for All Seasons" very interesting....its about Saint Thomas Moore. It's a play, but a VERY good one...have a read. Its a classic that I am sure your english teacher would be impressed with

Actually any book by Faulkner would be fairly short, Hemingway is a little bit longer (and to some can be hard to read).

There are some great American authors, just go back about 50-100 years for some good, deep books about the evils of just about anything under the sun: prostitution, alcohol, big business. You name it, they wrote about it. Some really good stuff, too.

Siddhartha by Herman Hesse. You teacher will like your choice and it is a very good story that is well under 300 pages.

Apoppin! We read the same books!

Anything Faulkner is a read. Faulkner will teach you *how* to read, if you are able to make anything of it. Very very deep symbolisism.

Hey, Apoppin, here is a question for you (see how well you read the book), in "The old man and the sea", what was the old man's name, and the young boy. Hemingway mentioned their names only once in the book.

Just a trivia question...

Well, I would suggest one of the early Clancy books (The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games), but your <300 page stipulation pretty well kills those. I read those in <10 hours, though, they're fairly fast reading.

DaBoneHead, that was more than 30 years ago! I hate to have this question on "Who Wants to be a Millionare?" (Juan? the boy?) I did know years ago.

I loved reading Faulkner with his many mixed complex story lines - amazingly that all made complete sense. He wrote well-crafted novels. Hemmingway also but in a very different way.

EDIT: Don't forget to post the answer. I'm off late to work (again). Catch you later.

For a nasty satirical view of the 80s, read Tom Wolfe's "Bonfire of the Vanities". DO NOT SEE THE MOVIE. Read the book! It's a hoot. A lot of pages, if I remember correctly, but a fast and fun read.

I think Camus' "The stranger" is the shortest book I read in high school, and one of the best.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach is a short one, only a little over a hundred pages long, but it is full of symbolism. I read it in high school, and I really enjoyed it.

DefRef: I loved Bonfire of the Vanities, thats a good book.

I am currently reading "A Storm of Swords" by George R. R. Martin. I tried pimpin' this book (as well as the previous two installments in the series) in a different thread, but I didn't get any replies. :(

This book might not meet your English class criteria, but it's an excellent book nonetheless!

Personally I would suggest Anne Rice. Interview w/ a Vampire is good but if you are looking for symbolism check out Memnoch the Devil. It is very compairable to The Book of Enoch and Paradise Lost.

Also, a teacher would be very impressed if you could reference those two books to Memnoch.

I know this goes outside the < 300 pg limit, but you might want to check out the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever. A trilogy, but there is some very good symbolism in there, and a very entertaining plot.

Kurt Vonnegut writes interesting stuff, and his novels are usually pretty short. Try Slaughterhouse Five, English teachers will eat it up (provided they are not too stodgy).

Ok, the 300 pg limit isn't set in stone, but my first mistake was chosing a somewhat deep book to read that was also 1100 pgs (and the type on each page was small), and I'd prefer not to make that mistake again.

Besides that, anything interesting.

Heart of Darkness is short and full of symbolism...but it's not for everyone.
