Need suggestions on a decent 27"+ CRT TV

I'm going to look through the classifieds on Sunday, but I'm open to buying new or used. Here's my criteria:

<= $300
>= 27"
no long delay between channel switching

I'd like a nice picture, but I'm not real picky. I'll get a calibration DVD for it so as long as the TV has decent image adjustment controls I'll be happy. We'll be using it mainly for XBox, some movie and TV watching.

Suggestions? Brands to stay away from?

Eveyone will tell you to stay away from Sony, but IMO their sets have the best image quality and colour.

Sure I agree but what good is excellent color if it'll only last you 2-3 years?

Stay away from Sony! Their quality has gone way down hill the last few years.

Ive said it before, and ill say it again, Samsung has horrible CRT TV's. Yeah yeah, im in the minority but people sacrafice picture quality for price. For what my opinion is worth, stay away from Samsung CRT's. My Picks.

Sony Wega 210 or 310 series.
Panasonic if you are on a budget.

What model and how long have you had it?

For the record, my roommate says his family has had a 27" Sony TV for 6 years now with now problems. Is it only some Sony TVs that crap out after a few years?

Are Best Buy and Circuit City's websites indicative of what they have in the store? Because I only found a 36" Tau on Circuit City's website and that's too much.

kv27-v42 (discontinued, i'm sure). i think we've had it about 3 years.
at the time we got it i didn't think flat screen was worth it (still don't) or PIP.

we've had NO problems.

everything electronic craps out eventually,
& if you've had any electronic gizmo for 6 years, then
it's time to upgrade, IMHO.

I have a 27" Toshiba that is a few years old and I really like it. I only wish it had more component video inputs like newer models do. I think Toshiba TVs offer nice picture quality and their prices are generally very competitive.

The only brand I have had bad experiences with lately is RCA. I had one of their TVs die on me within a week of getting it. This was about 5 years ago.

well for 300 u don't have many choices in terms of flat ones atleast. frys might still have the philips with digital comb filter for 299...i dunno. thats as low as it goes without going apex. the philips is quite nice.. i have one

Toshiba 27A33

After much staring at screens, I think I'm gonna get this for $239. The 32" model was really nice (and only $100 more) but I think it'd be too big for our room. We can only get about 6 feet away from the TV. Any thoughts?

As long as its not a Sony, good.

For what its worth, I got this Toshiba last year for around $279. It came on sale from BB right after Christmas with free shipping. The picture is excellent and it is flat screen also.

If you wait around a bit, I'm sure you'll be able to find a similar TV for around that price.

is it flat? if not.. ick. i've found that it makes a huge difference. flat gives the illusion of being bigger for one. 32" or bigger is always better, there is no too big at even 6 feet 🙂 but a flat 32" would go way past your budget.

i recently bought the philips 27" flat frmo frys for 299, its been that price for a while so it might still be that price today. had it side by side with my almost flat 27" panasonic, the flatness makes a big difference.
