I just bought a maxtor 30 gig hard drive.
I have the regular setup for my mobo. one floppy IDE, and two other IDE channels

The first IDE channel is connected to both my Plextor CD-RW and my DVD-ROM
The second IDE channel is connected to the two Maxtor hard drives; one is 40 gb 7200 RPM(primary master), and the other is 30 GB 5400 RPM

The problem is, seemingly all my ide connector points are used up.
Installed in my rig is:
2 hard drives
1 DVD Rom
1 CD-RW
and a floppy

I am trying to find another IDE point for my Internal Zip

Is there any way I could fit all of these devices in my machine so it all would function properly and cohesively?..

Thanks.

You will have to buy an ide controller card that fits a pci slot. You only need a basic ata 66 controller card to run your zip so it should be very cheap, probably under $20.

get an ide controller card. it should fit into an isa/pci slot. or get an external usb zip...those are really handy. plus, the new 250 usb zips look cool 😛

Or, you could stop tying up your precious CPU and system resources with IDE and just go SCSI. At least with the HD's. And I hardly see a need for Zip when you've got a CDRW.

thats a lot of stuff for one cpu. i hope you have a good one. i agree with imgod2u in that a cdrw is more reliable and cheaper than a zip drive. not to mention its faster, and more people have cdrom drives than zip drives. as for the rest of your problem, the only way to do it would either be to buy another controller, or invest in some scsi components. one scsi channel can take 7 devices, and most scsi cards have two channels. scsi isnt that hard to figure out, either. plus it will relieve your cpu of some of the stress its under right now, because of your current all-ide setup. obviously, the most economical way would be to go out and buy another controller for under 20, like Bglad said. but i happen to be a huge fan of scsi, so i just had to offer that option. 😀

Yeah i just picked up a ata66 controller card from consumer depot for $7 plus shipping which can be more than the card. But i got it for 12.88 after shipping, not to bad for a promise card that i plan on turning into a fast trak raid.

But almost any controller card should do for a zip drive, and then you will have up to 4 more devices you can install into your rig.
