I am looking at buying a personal laptop. For about two years I used a Dell D600 from my employer which did pretty much everything I needed. Im a graduate student now and need to get something that I can take to class as well as do some more fun things on as an addition to my home-built older desktop (Athalon, 128MB video card, 512MB RAM).
The main use would be Office applications, email and other basic usage. However, I do play some 3D games (NWN and maybe NWN2 when I have time). I wouldnt mind being able to use this as a secondary movie player and get into picture editing. There might be some additional opportunities for on-campus work to do video editing and help out with some of the professor's harebrained ideas with some graphics.
I would like to keep the price down below $1000 as I am a graduate student with a limited supply of cash.
Systems I have been considering include:
HPs DV6000t with a 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400 (rather than the basic accelerator), Intel Core Duo T2050 (1.6GHz), 80GB HD, 1GB DDR2, DVD burner which would run $825
I have also looked Dells 1505 and Lenovo T60 (my sis-in-law works there and can get me a discount but even with that the T60 runs a little more expensive than the HP or Dell). A roughly equivalent Dell runs $783.
If there are other brands I should consider, or if I am going overkill with the equipment (although I dont think I am).
