Need suggestions for my girlfriend's dream car

alfa147x

Lifer
So far she has liked the Smart Roadster, any thing else ECO friendly?
The problem is I don't know many 'treehugger' cars

Just so you know she drives a Saturn SW2 1995 and I drive the Altima from 1994 (Yes her car has more HP then mine... but thats before i turn on my Flux capacitor 😉 )

thanks for the assistance

p.s I am in the works of getting her on AT (Account), but decided to watch diggnation first...

Edit: we just realized how stupid this is; hope you guys don't mind :cookie:

Huh?

I'm not sure that I'd call the Smart car "eco friendly". It gets about 32 mpg on the freeway. An Accord with the I4 and manual transmission will get better mileage than that.

The Smart car gets 33/41 EPA which sound good until you realize a Yaris which gets to 60mph in the 8.9-10.5s range(depending on transmission and driver) versus 14.x, is bigger, much cheaper, and practical gets 34/40.

There's little to no point in getting a Smart besides the image.

No. That vehicle has some drawbacks. From what I've heard, its underpowered, lots of road noise, less cargo capacity and poor gas mileage for its size. It's got the cuteness factor working for it so it'll be very popular with girls and the 'in' crowd.

Yup, sorry, I mis-remembered. 😱

Mini's are considered Eco freindly
Offer something different, and its a real car to boot

"Few cars promise as many smiles per gallon as the tiny Mini Cooper. Unlike anything on the American road, the Mini Cooper provides excellent handling and performance in a package that provides very respectible gas mileage. In many respects, the Mini Cooper is without peer, particularly with regard to its thrift and velocity.

The standard six-speed manual Mini Cooper's gas milage figures of 27 city, 36 highway are just the ticket for folks who want both a sporty feel and great mileage"

No, you got it right, C&D or whoever (maybe Road & Track) tested a Smart and got 32 throughout the test, but when they test cars, you have to remember, they tend to drive aggressively and do performance testing.

I looked it up on R&T and yes, the averaged 32 over the whole test. Usually though their observed numbers are within the EPA range though. Even with the old EPA numbers they used to be usually slightly above the city mileage (they managed 18 mpg with a Mustang GT, EPA city was 17, and they managed a little over 32 mpg with a Nissan Versa that has EPA ratings of 30/34).

Yea I was going to say Mini and also the new Saturn Astra which gets 24/32 and comes in 3door or 5 (hatchback). Mini starts about $21k+ and Saturn Astra starts at $16k+

Miata? Little 4 banger and manual should be fun on the eco-friendly side of things.

except they don't, low gearing = high revs which = lowish economy

op: you do realize that the only smart dealer in GA is down in Buckhead, which is like a 2 - 2.5 hr drive just to get an oil change or basic maintenance.

Thats really not worth it, nor would it be worth it if she got in an accident.

Mini's aren't much better as thats still a long drive to the dealer, which is down in the middle of ATL.

Kind of the disadvantage of living up where we do. Have her get a civic or something.
