need suggestions for first build

I'm wanting to build my first comp by myself, wanting to go with pentium...don't have a preference I just don't really care. Since its my first build I'm looking for stability and hopefully not running into too much trouble. Also trying to keep the price down as low as possible, I'm not a performance junky but I want decent 3dmark scores. Anyways I've thrown together a quick blueprint of possible parts and I need suggestions, don't hesitate to throw something out there b/c I just put these ideas together rather quickly:

-Gigabyte GA-8IEXP Intel 845E Socket 478 P4 ATX motherboard Retail - $130
-Intel Pentium 4 2.0AGHz 512K Socket 478 Processor 400MHz Processor Bus Retail - $172
-256Mb DDR PC2100 ? CL=2.5 ? Unbuffered ? Non-parity ? 2.5V ? 32Meg x 64 - $63.89 (even though it might not be good time to buy with the current prices I'm thinking I might just go with 512Mb for future's sake)
-Lite On 40X12X48 CDRW Model: LTR40125S-Retail - $62
-LINKSKEY LKF-5100 10/100 (Realtek Chipset) PCI ETHERNET CARD - RETAIL -$9
-SONY 1.44MB 3.5 INCH INTERNAL FDD DRIVE - OEM Model MPF920-Z -$9
-MAXTOR Quiet Drive 40GB 7200RPM Model # 6L040L2 -D740X OEM, DRIVE ONLY -$78

Total so far before Video card, case, modem: $550

Need video card ideas, looking for Ti4200 I suppose since it seems like the best deal out there. I've found the PNY 64Mb card locallly for $100 which seems like a good deal but I was kind of wanting to find a 128Mb card.

Have monitor...speakers...and I would just use the onboard audio if this was the mobo I used.

Any case suggestions? What PS do I need?

Thanks. All ideas welcome. If I've forgotton something let me know.

Hi,

I would go with an Athlon processor, they are the best bang for the buck right now, AMD XP 1800+ should be fine. For the athlon processor I would go with the MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU. It is a great board, with onboard sound, usb 2.0, raid. here's a link.. I would put definitely 512MB of PC2700 DDR RAM. I would go with an antec case which comes with an antec true power supply. They are really good and here's a link.

I would go with a Radeon 8500LE 128MB video card, I have one and they are awsome for the price. If you want to spend a little bit more of money I would recommend an ALL-IN-WONDER video card from ATI. They are great and they will let you watch tv in your pc. They are a great investment.

Go with this set up. I have one similar and it is just great!🙂

I own the same board, pretty happy with it. But with all new chipsets coming out, you might want wait and see what new features are coming out. What operating system do you plan to run and what apps do you mainly use should determine your RAM. 512mb of PC2100 should be under 120 for decent name brand like Crucial and Kingston. Dell has the Lite-on burner $51.00 shipped, here is the link

The Gigabyte board you are looking at has Intel NIC card. So there is no reason for you to buy a NIC card.

If you can spare another 30 dollars, I would upgrade to Western Digital 80 GB 8mb SE. It should be under $110 at newegg.com.

Good luck.
