Need suggestions for computer/linux motherboard problems?

my roommate's student organization is building a new box to host their website and forums. the computer needs to be $500 max, preferably under $400, and all parts need to be 100% linux compatible. he mentioned that some newer motherboards are having trouble with linux. i had been thinking a duron system would be perfect but i'm guessing it would be via mobos which have the problems so that might not be a choice. so really what i need to know is about any linux problems people here have had. thanks.

I use an Iwill KK266 and Athlon with linux, and everything is fine. No problems with the board. Get a matrox video card, you probably don't need sound, but if yuo do, i'm not sure if the KK266's onboard sound works in linux (i see no reason why it shouldn't), because I disabled mine in favor of using SBLive!

Check out this site, they have a good idea of what is supported and what is not. Not to mention you can always go on the website of whatever distro. you are going to be using and ask specifically if this and that are supported. They Should be able to tell you. Also skip the Matrox. They are nice with linux but I am running with and Expert98 and it rocks, steady, cheap, nice and clean.

good luck.

btw: What is Chianti?
