ECS K7S5A and a Duron (Morgan) 1GHz. Sould be able to get both shipped on pricewatch for under $110. The motherboard supports either SDRAM or DDR.

You'll probably need a better power supply. I found a codegen 350 watt power supply at 800.pc for only about $30 including shipping. It's amd approved. Or, you can try a "pc kit" from pricewatch, which usually comes with a cheap case and power supply.

The amd ecs/duron solution would be cheapest but good point about the power supply so maybe the asus tuv4x with audio and a retail tualitan celeron of 1200 or so would be best.

AMD is picky about the power supply & run hotter so better cooling is generally required. Intel is still less picky about components and easy to set up.

I have 3 amd's and an intel

PII 233 machines

Chances are pretty good these are AT mobos, PS's and cases. Everything these days is ATX.

Your HDD's and video cards - hell, all the remaining components will be way behind the curve and drag down system performance.

It might be best to look at low-end complete boxes.

Just a caveat.

The p2 systems will likely have PC66 SDRAM and small/slow hard drives. but they may well be ATX case & power supply (my p2-266 was). The power will almost certainly not be good enough for duron, but probably good enough for celerons.

Another thread just recommended the Asus TUSI-M mobo for $60 with onboard audio/video/LAN, there's also the TUVX for $75 (both at newegg.com), pair them with a celeron 1.1a / 1.2a and 128 MB of PC133 (256 MB if running Win2000/WinXP).

Given the cost of removing / installing mobos and possible power supply problems it might be better to buy a barebones PC -- newegg has them starting at about $150, and Googlegear has the tiny little Asus barebones fairly cheap.
