My boy wants to try out skateboards. I'm trying to find something decent under $50. Is this okay?.

I am looking on the Cincy CL as well but I have no idea about what is/is not a good deal.

Get a Wal-Mart special...it'll be able to take the beating of a five year old, unless of course he really picks up on it and becomes pro-am material :)

He loves his bike and rides it a lot everyday. He is trying to 'jump' curbs and ride without any hands and has paid for it a couple times. He has a Razor scooter that he tries to do tricks on as well and get a lot of abuse.

I don't want to waste even $25 on something that breaks right away.

he weighs like 25 lbs dude, i doubt he's going to break the skateboard. i would check out the bearings on that board before you buy it. dont get something with plastic trucks either.

No shit.

I refuse to give advice to such moronic questions.

I hope to God for his kid's sake that this is a troll post

I don't think its a troll post.

OP: I will say, Wal-Mart boards won't last long if he does a lot of tricks and stuff on it. It will probably be too big for him, anyways. If you felt like spending some $$$, you can hop on to CCS or MonsterSkate and build him a deck better for his size (a mini deck).

I use to take the wheels off my sister's skates, the old white leather ones with the metal wheels. :D

Those wheels were great until they started wearing holes in them. :(

Lots of....tricks on it? A 5 year old?

I'd buy him a helmet before anything else

It's amazing what a 5 year old can do on a skateboard. ;)

I think that wal mart board is going to be a good bet.

If he shows more interest then upgrade him, if not you aren't out much dough.

Thanks for the tips. This wasn't a troll post. Since I have zero knowledge about what make a good skateboard I figured I would ask here. I just hate spending even a little money and getting a crappy product. I figure if I spend a few bucks now the board may last a few years. He already has helments and pads and isn't averse to pushing his limits. I guess if he doesn't like it after a few weeks; his old man will test out his medical coverage.

Yeah it won't matter too much. Something like you linked should be just fine.

It's been quite a few years since I skated but if I remember it was like 7-ply standard deck. But the weight and strength of the deck isn't going to matter much at this level. For comparison, it cost about $90-100 for an average good skateboard (deck, wheels, bearings, trucks). So you'd have to figure that $50 ought to be more than enough at his level.

Just make sure it isn't too big. I forgot what I usually rode... I think it was about 7.75" wide. Obviously you don't want to get him one that big. They make mini ones.

Make sure the trucks seem solid enough (metal) and that the wheels spin decently.

For wheels, a larger diameter wheel is better for cruising and can absorb bumps in the road and rocks much better. Smaller diameter is better for tricks. I think I used around a 52mm.
