Need suggestions for AMD XP mobo

Due to problems I have been having with an Asus, I have decided to go a different direction with my friends system and try a new mobo.

He already has an AMD 1700 and one stick 512mb SDRAM along with all the other components. So what we need is a mobo that has:

Support for AMD xp's (1700)
No built in peripherals (i.e. no sound or nic)
SDRAM slots

I have heard good things about Epox but their new boards seem to be all DDR ram only. Would prefer the VIA chipset.

Thanks for the help.

Wow... that kinda cuts down the options. I'd say that the MSI K7T Turbo is the best board out there which meets that list of specifications.

Most of the recent boards out have support for the AMD XP, either right out of the box or with a bios update. Is this the 168 pin Dram? If so, you might want to think about trading it in or selling it to buy some DDR cause you will probably get better results and find faster, more stable and a better selection in the new DDR boards. 512 Megs is alot of ram but it doesn't cost much more than a 256 stick of DDR and you will probably get better performance from one stick of 256Meg DDR since most general programs don't use that much memory.

Epox do offer good boards and it's true there seems to be more DDR boards out there than the earlier 168pin sdram ones. If you have a fairly new video card offering DDR, you should use DDR ram on your mobo to get the most out of the card. You can find very affordable DDR boards out now too offering the Via chipset(KT266a). That would be my suggestion to you. Dump the sdram and get DDR and a board that supports that.

Well...I guess I answered my own question by doing some research. I went with an MSI K7T266 Pro2. From what I have seen it has received very good reviews.

Andy22,
get your buddy to go with the DDR RAM (512mb) and the MSI K7T266 Pro 2,you'll be very happy😉

Thanks for the heads up Maximus but yeah, I talked him into ordering a stick of crucial 256 DDR. He is gonna build another system with the SDRAM.
