do 56k modems really differ that much in speed and throughput or whatever? i know they can be resource hogs and i should look out for that, but i was curious, what really makes a good modem good?

but im looking for one in the $30-55 range but if i like it or if things dont matter, i could go higher or lower, i guess. not much, tho. im poor, heh. ive heard lt winmodems are ok, but that was in an interal pci thread. i dont care if its internal or external, whichever will give me less lag.

lol.... gaming modem.... heh. How about a NIC ? 😉 Well, back in the day I had the best pings than any of my friends with a LT-Winmodem.

Modems don't really mean much... it is all about your phone lines running in to your home and around your home... I had like 4 different modems b4 cable came to my town... My best modem was a Zoom modem... it game me pings of around 140-220.....

thats not a possibility for everyone....

... with that said I'm going to go back to surfing on my cable modem 😀

pcgamer did an article on net gaming, and reccomended the 'diamond supraexpress 56e' as the best only gaming modem. i got one, it's good, i get good pings, and download rates upto 6

but it morely depends on u're ISP and telephone line, one like AOL is a piece of crap and u'll get terrrible speeds

Typical remark from a spoiled broadband user......

The fact remains that the MAJORITY of internet users still can't get broadband. Why? Most of the people living in older neighborhoods require major infrastructure upgrades just to be able to accomodate such technology. With cable modems you need fiber optics; with DSL you need proper line conditions.

For me, it wasn't until last October (that's only 4 months!) that I was able to get 640/256k DSL. Do you think for one minute that someone wanting to play online games would disregard high-speed internet and stick with a 56k modem if they had the choice? I don't think anyone would. In fact, I was paying merely $5 less per month to have an additional phoneline and Earthlink dialup at $21.95/month than I am paying going with a much faster connection now! At rates like those, of course someone would jump the high-speed bandwagon. But again, this isn't an option for a lot of people still.

yeah, i didnt think it made a huge difference. ill probably just get an lt winmodem for compatibility sakes if it doesnt matter. plus i bet theyre pretty cheap.

that should hold me over till i can convince dad to get dsl
🙂
