One of my uncles is heading to the middle east for six months, & needs a CDRW drive to take with him. He'll be using it with a laptop, so it needs to be external. I'm assuming that an external CDRW has a separate power supply, right? Which means that he'll need one that will work on Euro power.

So basically we're looking at, in order of importance:

1) External
2) Capable of US AND Euro power
3) Reasonably fast

Any suggestions?

there are two kinds of externals, well three. parallel port, USB and SCSI. PP sucks. so i can only say USB and SCSI. SCSI being the best and most expensive and the best, did i mention it's the best.

of course since it's a laptop, it's gonna be a mess. however, since it is a laptop, there is another option, pc card (PCMCIA), never seen a card bus CDRW drive ;-).

no real recommendations, depends if you want USB, SCSI or pcmcia.

PCMCIA CDRW? I can see having a PCMCIA SCSI adapter, & then a SCSI CDRW...

I don't think he really cares whether it's USB or PCMCIA. The power source is the biggest problem we have to worry about.

not really

you'd be surprised how many adapters there are out there.

actually, the best thing is if the power adapter (ac to dc) is a brick that is not attached to the drive. this way, all he needs is an adapter that converts whatever the middle east uses to the DC power that the drive uses.

the power is not really a problem.

find out what the middle east countries your uncle is going to be visiting, and hit electronics sites. radio shack definitely has them. i know jameco.com has international stuffs.

Another option is IEEE 1394. You can get a PCMCICA IEEE 1394 interface card and one of those nice Sony drives to go with it. :) It's probably as costly as going SCSI, however.
