Why Fry's? What kind are you looking for? For $1500 you can get a D-SLR, which is prolly much unless you're already an accomplished photographer.

$1000-1500 is a LOT for a consumer-level digital camera. Most good ones range from $400-600. (Take my Canon S400 for example, retails for $499, street is about $450).

Anyhow, yeah, for $1500 I'd get a Nikon D100 Digital SLR. :) You'd need to buy some lenses tho.

I think if he goes with one of new Canon's he'll have enough for a lens and MAYBE a flash.

You can get a VERY nice digital SLR camera for that much.

I dunno if Fry's is such a good place to buy such an expensive digicam, but maybe.

highest end digi cam you will find at frys is the G5, or sony 717. With that kind of budget, look at a digital SLR, i would suggest the Canon D10

If you're not planning on being some crazy professional photography person, get a Canon G5 (or G3 to save money).

If you just want one to carry around in your pocket everywhere and whip out when you need it, the Canon S400.

Canon G5, although a kick ass camera, does not cut if for professional photography, especially with his budget.

He never said he wanted to be a pro. And the S45/50 would be a better choice then the S400 IMHO for general use. I bought the S200 because I wanted a smaller form factor. Otherwise I would have gone for the S45.

Which cam would be the best on the lower end of the spectrum, but still have some decent settings? I'd want to be able to muck with as many settings as possible.

Stay away from fry's..

Go to www.samyscamera.com and check out the camera's there. Infact I can say for a fact that you will get it cheaper here than anywhere else. They are a HUGE camera place that caters to hollywood. Their prices sometimes arent that great as a deal but sometimes they package good stuff.

I think OP means digital camcorder NOT digital camera.
Probably in the line of Sony DCR-PC101 or better.

If you want something Palmable I'd get a Sony.

Features you want to look for would be good optical zoom My Sony DCR-PC9 has 10x optical, and a lot of other MiniDV camcorder is 10x as well. So I guess you should be shooting for something higher.

15x ?

Features like Nightshot or equivalent, Steadyshot is mandatory, also nice selection of add on parts including ( light, lens, etc.. ) most of them feature still shots that can be saved on some sort of memory stick or dv tape.
You should look for high resolution still ?

since it is digital comcorders your looking for, honestly i would have suggested sony, until panasonic put out their 3CCD seen here, which is pretty bad ass, gives you 3MP still photos as well.
