Need suggestion on games for Nintendo DSi

Hopefully this is the right place to ask. We just got a Nintendo DSi for the family and I have zero clue about what kind of games available for this platform as we've been pretty ignorant about it all this time.

My wife will be the primary user and she likes to play Popcap type games like Zuma/Peggle. I searched a bit and found Magnetica, and will go look for it. Anything else I should look for for these type of games?

My son (he turns 6 next week) will also get to play this a bit. So far he's been enjoying the voice manipulation stuff and the Brain Age games included, but suggestions for fun/educational games that's suitable for him will be great. He loves to read (and does it at 2nd grade level) so a little challenging reading game will be good for him.

I'll probably get to play it the least. I'm a huge fan of turn-based RPG so I'll be looking for the Fire Emblem game (used to play it on the Gamecube and loved it) as I know there's one for the DS.

Any suggestions will be welcome. We'll probably be scouring the local GameStop-type stores for pre-owned stuff so old favorites are always good to know.

Thanks!

If your wife likes Bejeweled, then Puzzle Quest 1 and 2 are virtual no-brainers. Other entertaining puzzlers I enjoyed include Meteos and Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes.

Turn-based RPGs are almost too numerous to mention: assorted Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Etrian Odyssey, Mario and Luigi, Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey.

Tetris DS, New Super Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Party DS,

My daughter's 8, and she's been playing Animal Crossing for about a year 1/2 now. So, your son might like that. Let me forewarn you though, no one else will have a chance to play the DSi if you get him animal crossing.

Just curious, why would you spend $150+ on a gaming system yet have no clue about the games for it?

Wouldn't it have made more sense to first figure out what games you wanted, and then purchase the system?

This is what I think every time somebody makes a "what games should I get" thread. If you don't know what games you wanted then why buy the console?

You know what guys, that's a very good point. I don't think I have a great answer for it.

I could tell you the long story about how my wife always wanted a handheld gaming device to play on her spare time, that we were planning to buy the iPod Touch 4th generation (a platform I'm quite familiar with) at first, and then how we went back and forth between the Touch and the DSi when they announced they were cutting the prices on the DS, etc. But even I don't really think the two pages of this short story will be a good explanation.

I guess the best thing I can come up with is for you to try to think about it from an extreme casual angle. We just wanted a handheld gaming device to have fun with. We set a budget, we looked at several options, considered the facts, and finally decided on one.

I completely understand where you guys are coming from though. In my case, mobile phones are something I understand and always try to keep myself up to date with. Consoles, not really. I would have thought the same thing about someone who just bought an iPhone (or, the trend lately, an Android phone) without knowing what they're going to do with it except making phone calls, pretty much showing they didn't really know what they're getting.

Henry Hatsworth and Puzzle Quest are my favorites. Super Princess Peach, Yoshi's Island, Pokemon, Point Blank, Children of Mana, Elite Beat Agents, Kirby Squeak Squad and Superstar Ultra, Legendary Starfy, Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright, Zombie BBQ, anything Mario.

I will 2nd the Professor Layton series.

I only played the first one that was released in the US but wanted to play the other 2 sequels so badly. I couldn't b/c my DS was kinda jacked up so I just never got around to it.

And w/ the 3DS coming early next year, I may just wait for either a price drop or get the 3DS and then play the other ones.

Are you lookign for turn based rpg like Dragon Warrior (like others have suggested) or "turn based strategy rpg" like Final Fantasy tactics? There are also amazing turn based strategy games like Advance Wars.

^ lol People have too much disposable income these days.

For portables, some people want portable gaming as a time killer.

LOL...

R4DSi or an Acekard 2i.. no brainer.. you'll need it so you can carry multiple cartidges in 1 single cartridge.. AND it does other stuff like MP3, and even video..
