Need SSD finding help/How to transfer stuff

Im just looking for a pretty fast SSD, not very expensive. I currently have a 500GB WD Caviar blue and I wanted something to load programs alot faster and have a much faster boot time. I've looked into many SSD's but im not sure on how I should make my decision. Mainly because it would be a swap from the HDD to the SSD, and I already have used 222 GB of it. I found that the easiest possible way to move stuff was to copy it all, like using norton ghost or any other programs like that. That would be the lazy way too, but doing the whole windows movement thing is just really complicated to me unless there was an easier solution. Because I dont want to mess anything up in the process of doing the transfer. So basically for SSD's im looking for a range of 200 GB-250 GB <- That might be wrong because the windows partition take up about 35 GB, you can tell when you would go to properties on the HDD. Bare its 500 GB but with windows its displayed as 465 GB. If im correct there.... So it could be possible that I need even a 300 GB SSD. So I just need some answers to figure out how this transfer would work and what SSD's I should look at.

I do not see how you can be looking for a 200-250GB drive when you already have 222GB used. In any case, a 250GB for an existing 222GB load is very tight and probably a bad long term decision.

Two questions:

1) What is your budget

2) Is there a physical limitation that prevents you from keeping the existing drive as a secondary drive? If possible, it would make the 250GB or an smaller drive very possible options. If the system can only fit one drive, an option to consider is a hybrid Seagate Momentus. There are members of the forum that have been happy with them in a notebook environment. I believe CORKYG is one of them.

Oops sorry dont know how I would've forgotten that part, yes im keeping the 500 as a secondary hard drive. Im not sure what my budget area would be in right now so ill just take some suggestions, atleast under $400 would work for now.

You are making this WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too complicated.

1.Buy SSD (Seriously, the last two days have been on fire as far as sales, expect to pay ~$.65/gb. A 120gb drive should be plenty, but if you really want to blow that $400, there's 500gb ssd's on sale as well.)
2.Install Windows/apps
3.Use 500gb drive for storage/progs that are not often used.

I copied windows over to my new ssd by resizing paritions and then realigning windows and it was actually a pain in the ass and took forever. It probably took ~10hr altogether because of all the defragging and resizing and etc needed.

Afterwards, I realized it would have been much easier to just copy windows conventionally like I had done in the past.

Boot into a linux usb distro. Copy all the files from your old drive to your new drive minus any big media files to save space. Now reboot with a windows cd. Use the windows cd option to make you SSD bootable. You are done.

thank you zephyrprime, this is a response ive been looking for. But do you think there's any possible way to hook both the drives up to my laptop as removable storage and just copy all the windows files over to the SSD? I doubt it but if that isnt possible, how exactly would this copy option work? Just put linux on a USB drive and set that USB drive as the #1 in boot order? Then after copying all windows files except media which I can keep on the HDD, I reboot and set my CD drive as #1 with windows in, and set my SSD as the windows "owner" (not sure what the word for that would be) or the drive that has the files to boot windows? And after setting order back to SSD, im done? Sorry im confused with this but im just trying to get my steps right..

Actually nevermind, i think that im just going to end up backing up all my files and other media.. All my games are off of steam so I can just re download them, or just back some of them up too. And after ive got everything ill format the hard drive and start fresh. At this point there is only 2 problems i can see that "could" come up. 1. SSD is bad, wont boot, bsods. Ok everythings backed up I can RMA it. 2. Everything works great but it says this copy of windows in not genuine. It turns out this happens to maany many people. Most people said the windows key is actually saved to the motherboard. Then other people said they switched their motherboard and they never had any problems. I think ill just go through with this plan though, seems like it could be the best idea and easiest, all it needs is time. My question is though, when you install something off the internet like a game or whatever thats pretty big, say 20gb... Since the hdd is basically bare, would i just drag the file or game or movie whatever it could be over to the drive as if it was a little usb stick? And if there was a way to select where it goes that way im not wasting time waiting an hour for it to install only to wait another to move it over to the other drive..
