I visited my parents a couple weeks back and noticed their TV has no speakers hooked up. They're using the internal speakers, which just don't put out much sound. And their whole setup is pretty jury-rigged as it is. They have a DVD player hooked up and the audio output goes to the aux input on their old stereo system, so they do get decent audio when they play DVDs. For Netflix, my dad hooks up his laptop and plugs in a set of computer speakers. So that's three sets of speakers depending on what they're doing.
Ideally I'd like to just hook up a decent pair of speakers directly to the TV so they don't have to do all this crap. Unfortunately, the TV is an old 32" LCD and the only audio output available is an orange digital coax. I've never even seen a device that uses it so I'm not sure what to do.
I'm weighing several options:
First of all, they don't want to spend much money. So a $200 receiver and $200 floorstanding speakers are not going to happen. Their old stereo still sounds just fine; for being 15 years old there's really nothing wrong it other than it being pretty large.
They do like to listen to the radio and sometimes CDs so they'd prefer a new stereo system with the required inputs over a receiver. Although I guess a receiver could just be used the same as a digital-analog converter.
Does this all sound right? I want to make sure they don't buy something that ends up not working. Any advice? Thanks a lot.

I'm weighing several options:
- Get a digital-analog converter box and send it to the stereo's auxiliary input
- Find a set of speakers that has a digital coaxial input.
- Get a receiver or a new stereo that has a digital coax input to replace their current stereo (which is at least 15 years old).
- Recommend a new TV that would have the required outputs; move the current TV to another room (probably won't happen as it's expensive and their current TV is fine except for the lack of outputs).
