Too bad you bought a Bose system...

But on to the topic, what do you plan on doing with it, music? If so, save your wallet (as much as you can now, anyway) and get a Chaintech AV-710 for $27 or so at ZipZoomFly. You'll like what you hear if you set it up right.

but is the bose really that bad b/c i can still return it

can you reccomend a good speaker setup on newegg between 1-300$

If Newegg had the Klipsch iFi set, that would be at the top of my list ;)

Some from newegg that differ from the usual suspects:

EDIT: For music, 2.0 or 2.1 is the way to go

should i keep the bose thought or what??

Just make sure you configure the Chaintech to use the rear output jack (info in that AVSforum thread I linked to)

As for the speakers... I think I'm required by law to tell you not to go with the Bose. They're already on their way though?

should i go with one of those i listed above?

Those are certainly an option and will be significantly better than most "computer speaker" sets.

In addition to computer speaker sets, you could also get a 2.0 set of bookshelf speakers and an amp going.

I'm using a pair of AV123 X-LS bookshelf speakers and a Sonic T-amp for my work system.

As with most (if not all) things bose, you're paying a lot more than what the actual system is worth to get the bose name and support their massive marketing.

it is best to let your ears tell you what you like. bring some of your favorite cds to a store and listen carefully to different speakers. if the store cannot or will not accomodate you, walk out immediately. obviously this is hard to do when shopping online. people tell me they like logitech and klipsch for pc setups. i've listened to logitechs, and i think they're a very good value (sounds good, not very expensive). i've heard klipsch loudspeakers many times, and i still don't like the horns, but that's my personal taste. both can be found for considerably less than bose.

the chaintec should be a good card (sounds good, not very expensive), as long as you aren't playing intense video games.

copy of the reply I sent to the PM you sent sent:

Tell me about DACs! You seem to mention them alot!

DACs are Digital to Analog Convertors, hence the acronym. They take the digital signal from you computer and convert it to and analog signal suitable for external speakers. I'm not going to go into much detail her, but the basics are as follows. The better DACs you have, the higher quality the analog output from your card will be. If you get an Envy24HT card, the DACs are pretty much garuanteed to be good, and you'll like the sound they give. If you get an Envy24HT-S card though, things get a little trickier. All Envy24HT-S cards come with the VIA VT1616 6-channel DAC for channels 1-6, and then they have a seperate 2-channel DAC for channels 7-8. This leads to one of the quirks with these cards. The DAC for channels 7-8 is higher quality than the other 6-channel DAC, and as such, the control panel for this card allows you to use this card in a 2-channel mode that outputs your sound through channels 7-8 that has the higher quality DAC. In the end, this essentially means that if you are only going to use this card as a 2-channel analog card (ex. headphone use), then the audio can be just about as good as the more expensive Envy24HT cards.

Basically the card will have an option in the sound utility program to use the rear output jack as stereo output. That's the way you'll want to use the card.
