Need something to hold me over til D3, all Titan Quest'd out

OP, I'm in the same boat. No Diablo clone, in my opinion, has ever come close to replicating the "feel" of a Diablo game.

Titan Quest: couldn't hold my attention (I tried)
Sacred 2: pretty game, but SO boring
Torchlight: came the closest, but it doesn't take itself seriously enough (it was like playing Red Alert when you wanted C&C)

Sure, some of these manage the mechanics of Diablo, but that doesn’t make them fun. While Diablo is a game about clicking, it manages to make you think you’re doing so much more. Those other games were all reasonably well built, but I just felt like I was doing nothing but clicking. I can’t explain it.

2014 or later, and I wouldn't bet on that too heavily 😀

Lots of signs point to a possible 2011 release with a beta coming this summer. Sure 2012 is much more likely, but I’m not sure where you get 2014 from.

Fable is also another low budget D2 clone.

You don’t know what you’re talking about. First of all, Fable is NOT a Diablo clone. Second, Fable wasn’t low budget. It actually had an incredible hype machine behind it prior to its launch! In fact, the hype was so insane that, although the game was rather good, it felt like a huge disappointment.

Blizzard of course. SC to SC2 took 12 years. WC2 to WC3 took 7 years. And D2 is more like SC than WC2 or WC3 in terms of legacy and reputation, so them taking that long or longer wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

The problem is next year there will likely be yet another WoW expansion in the summer or winter, and it's possible to see a SC2 expansion late this year or next year as well, though I doubt they pace them as quickly as WoW expansions so they may be pushed out further. While some cannibalization is inevitable from their other titles, you can be sure they want as few people as possible choosing "Hm. Heart of the Swarm/Legacy of the Void vs D3?" or "WoW Expansion#4 vs D3?", so timing is key. Late this year would actually be quite good as far as competing with their own titles goes, but I'd sooner bet the over than the under 😀

Edit: Also anyone looking for a D2 fix should definitely look into Median XL. Never played it personally but heard some great things.

Sorry, had a brian lock. I meant the game Fate, not Fable. Fate is a Wildtangent game, $6.99. Like I said before it is pretty similar to Torchlight, but less dark.

About Mythos-is that from the same team that did Hellgate: London, and were also many of the same people that developed D2? Could be interesting, but to be quite frank Hellgate: London didn't do anything for my D2 itch at all.

When Mythos was originally in beta (year or two back) it was a lot of fun to play and I cant wait until the US beta opens.

I played the Torchlight demo and couldn't bear it. Even the cartoony part isn't that bad (though it's funny how it's EXACTLY a D2 clone, down to the ID scrolls), but two things were deal breakers for me:

1) How the entire screen shook almost every time you whacked an enemy with no way to turn off this "feature".

2) The UI is way oversized and you can't shrink it and it doesn't get any smaller with a higher resolution. This is like a game for visually impaired people. It's way too clunky.

Sigh, I should just go back to D2.

Are there any good SC2 RPG maps out there?

There are a bunch of torchlight ui mods. There is even one that turns it into the diablo 2 ui. I never had the screen shaking issue, but I always played in windowed mode, I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Torchleech is actually a pretty cool mod downloader, there are a lot of addons that make the game more interesting with additional levels, bosses, etc...breaks the grind a little bit. I became an achievement whore on steam with this game 😀

Also try Dungeon Siege 2 and Torchlight. And maybe Higher Grounds if you play NWN.

That is funny, diablo developers have stated that the game is finished and is currently in alpha for polishing. Suggested Q4 2011 but stated that they could not be quoted on it (finished when it is finished)

Tried playing D2 again and I can't do it ... the graphics aren't even that bad but the lack of a higher resolution support is undoable. 800x600 on a 24" wide screen looks horrible. Looks like I'll have to tough it out on SC2 custom maps.

I'd rather play D2 than some basic mod in an RTS engine. Regardless of graphics, D2 will be more fun. I've gone through normal a few times with various champs before settling back on the paladin again. I don't even know why I like D2 over the newer games tbh, TQ and Sacred are much better on paper and in graphics.
