I think the title says it all. I need someone from the NYC area who knows the subway system inside-out. I will be flying from Chicago into Long Island MacArthur Airport (ISP) in Islip, NY and need to get to Hoboken, NJ. It is about 55 miles away by car. Can it be done by subway??

Thanks!

you can't take the subway from Islip Airport, you're going to have to take a Cab to the LIRR, and take that into penn station, and then a path train into hoboken

from the website-->

There is shuttle service from MacArthur Airport to the nearby Ronkonkoma train station:
Colonial Transportation of Long Island offers convenient shuttle service between MacArthur Airport and the Ronkonkoma train station (LIRR). The shuttle van departs the train station daily at 5:30am, then departs the airport on the hour and half-hour from 6:00am until 10:30pm. Curbside pick up at the airport is directly in front of baggage claim. The shuttle will pick up and drop off at the North Platform of the Ronkonkoma train station. The one-way fare is $5.00 per person. Cash and credit cards are accepted. All rates are subject to change without notice. The Suffolk County Bus Transit also offers hourly service to and from MacArthur Airport to the train station with the S-57 Bus except Sundays and(No service, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day or Christmas). The fare is $1.50.The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) offers frequent service to Penn Station in Manhattan from the Ronkonkoma train station The train ride is approximately one hour and 25 minutes. The train fare currently $6.50 (non-rush hour times) into the city will take you to Penn station which is located in Manhattan at 33rd street and 7th Avenue. From there you can get to your ultimate destination by subway or by taxi.

Thank you! It sounds a bit more complicated than I might want. I might just do the rental car thing. It is about a hour to my final destination in Hoboken (according to MapQuest, that is). I don't know much about NYC area traffic, but I will be arriving about 11:00am on a Friday. I DO KNOW about Chicago traffic (oh, man) but this is a relatively safe time to get around in Chi-town.

I live in downtown Chi-town. If I was to go this route during the day, I don't think I would have much to worry about (I have no fear).

it'll probably be a little less stressful taking the train tbh.

you'd have to drive through the city to get into hoboken, which would totally suck no matter what time of the day it is.

at least by taking the train, you pretty much know what time the train departs, and what time it'll be when you get into penn station, and then what time the train arrives and departs from penn station into hoboken.

I'm sorry, but there is no way in hell you are getting from Islip to Hoboken in an hour by car. You'll be lucky to get to Queens in an hour from Islip at that time of day. Expect the trip to take at the bare minimum 1.45hours if you hit relatively light traffic going through the city.

Your best bet is taking the shuttle to the Ronkonkoma line, buying a ticket at the station (it's at least $6 extra if you buy it on the train), and then taking the train into Penn. From Penn, you should take the correct train listed here: http://www.njtransit.com/sf_tr_schedules.shtml# to Hoboken.

More info for NJ trains here: http://www.njtransit.com/sf_tr.shtml

Thanks again. That is why I am asking the New York types running around here--good info. Yeah, I know about stress driving on the Kennedy in Chicago. Some days it is fine, but for no apparent reason the Kennedy can lock up and become a moving parking lot and cause you to want to drink a cup of cyanide, fast.

Looks like the train it will be. I will print this thread and bookmark the links. Thanks everyone!

How long are you staying in Hoboken and what for ? That would be the deciding factor for me for car vs. train. The car ride is bearable during the middle of the day (the earlier the better on a Friday). The train ride will be on schedule but uneventful and long. It's convenient but I hate waiting for the LIRR trains and transferring on the subways after.

Driving that would be fine, especially if you plan on driving around in Hoboken too. But definitely 1.5+ hours on the roads via car.

If he's just travelling from Islip to Penn, then he won't even have to transfer to a subway. He'll just pick up one of the trains from Penn to Hoboken on the chart I linked him to above.

But yes, waiting for the LIRR is a pain, because normally the trains run only ever hour.

And yes, it really isn't that scary driving in NY. People exaggerate greatly. If you're from a big city, you'll be fine driving.

I'm hesitant to drive you, you might be an axe murderer.

Usually, I'd offer to drive you if you were an older member. I let them pick any color car also. Gotta give me a coupla hours to find one if its an odd color. Can specify leather, sunroof, etc. All cars are new or like new.
