Do NOT give 2 weeks notice! Wait until the last day and then tell them it's your last. You'll most likely be fired as soon as you give your notice so why throw away 2 weeks pay?

And get this, if the company was to let you go, do you think that they would give you 2 weeks notice?

Do you ever want to get another job?

Good advice if you don't want to use the job for a reference. Give the two weeks' notice like a gentleman would.....the job will appreciate it. Also, it's against the law to fire you if you give notice to quit...lawsuit material.

I work with people getting hired and leaving jobs EVERYDAY. I get people new jobs. The WORST thing you could do is leave without giving two weeks notice.

A new employer will doubt you, and you will be burning a bridge with your previous boss. Give two weeks notice. It will benefit you in the long run. And hey, they might not accept your notice. Then you get it all, reference down the road, two weeks paid, and a happy new job!!!

Good luck!

By the way, the letter that was posted by Kranky is the way to go.

I doubt it's worth suing over because of the costs of suing involved. However if they do give you a bad reference you can sue so that isn't an issue. Most employers have a policy of only saying when you were there and nothing else. My previous employer routinely fired people who gave notice and didn't pay them for the last 2 weeks. My previous employer before that did the same thing except at least they paid you for your last week (I gave 1 week notice) which was nice because it's like getting exrta vacation.

This is what I just used about 4 months ago. I really liked working for this company, and was sad to go, but I needed new challenges. So that's the tone I set with the letter. If you hated your old company, write one with some reasons why you were leaving and be polite about it if you want to continue using them as a reference.

Dear Manager,

This letter is to inform you that I have been offered an opportunity to work as a software developer for a bank in New City. Therefore I will be resigning my position here at Old Company effective Friday, March 16, 2001.

This decision was not an easy one to make. I have enjoyed the time I have spent working and learning here. However after much consideration, I have made the decision to accept the new job. I would like to thank Company for giving me the opportunity to work here and for providing an excellent work environment.

I will miss the Company family and I wish all the best in the years to come.

Sincerely,

Me

IT IS ABSOLUTELY necessary to hand deliver this note to the manager (1st choice) or payroll lady (2nd choice) in person.

Most IT firms will ask you to leave immediately with pay for security concerns.

But what do you do if the company has a history of not paying the last 2 weeks?

Huh?

Once you quit, you cannot be fired. Its the law. If you are on salary, you will get your 2 weeks worth.

If you are hourly, and have a schedule they make, they can lame duck you.

Its important to keep on good terms my friend.

I just quit my job this morning but gave 3 weeks notice (i'm going to college)...the boss gave me an extra $200 on my vacation pay (4% of what you've made since you started) and said thanks for doing a good job :) I didn't use a letter...did it in person.

You need to do it in writing. It goes, by law, in your employee file.

Don't listen to anything else, please do it in writing. Otherwise if you leave on bad terms, you can be held liable (ie they'll keep your last check) for not giving proper and due notice.

Actually it isn't always against the law to fire someone for quitting. Anyone under hiring probation, any temp, any contractor, etc can generally be fired or quit on the spot without any notice and often for no reason...that's the 'Employer or employee may at any time terminate employment for any reason without previous notice' clause that's creeping up so often today. Also certain states (like oregon) can always fire you with no warning by stating that you had access to privilidged information and they felt it was unsafe for you to continue working there because of it. Convergys fires anyone who gives notice. So does Stream. So does CyberRep. If you give notice they nod at you, pick up the phone, call security and have you escorted off the property right there. I watched it happen (and had it happen) more than once.

Yeah, the only reason I did it (without a letter) is because we're a small company. Only about 7 people in the office. We all know each other pretty well. We have no secretary...the boss does the payroll, etc. Very small operation but we have $1 million jobs going through this place.

I disagree, many companies that would have fired you won't. If they fire you they won't get any work out of you, they have to find a replacement immediately, they burn bridges, and the potentially have to pay more for unemployment insurance.

This is the first time I've heard of an employer doing that. I cannot see any benefit on the employers part for having the employee canned immediately.

As long as the phrase:

"Take this job and shove it!"

Are not in the letter, you should be ok. ;)

They can't keep your pay, I do believe that's illegal. You don't even have to sue for it. You can send a govt agency after them for it. Plus the place I used to work at doesn't care when people quit anyway.

My lawyer says that in Maryland they can fire you anytime they want and don't need a reason. If you give 2 weeks notice your only giving them the opportunity to screw you out of 2 weeks pay.
