Ok, when I had this HSF on my Athlon XP motherboard, installation was easy, just put the brackets into the 4 mounting holes, and attach the cooler to them. Now with any Athlon 64, I need to attach a Zalman backplate and "nipples"
Right now, I just took off the black mounting thing that is usually on A64 mobos, and used the long black screws that were in it to install the cooler onto the backplate that is GLUED to the motherboard. I remember running into the same problem with another A64 rig I was building for a friend, but it was an ASUS K8V SE and the glue came right off (no tugging, just unscrewing the mount up on top and pulling the backplane off)

So, what should I do?

CLIFF NOTES:
Need to get a Zalman cooler onto an Athlon 64 motherboard
Motherboard already has mounting equipment installed
Safe to use?

Click on the amd cooler section on the left, find your product, and click on the installation movie for your 7000b here: http://www.zalman.co.kr/

For 939 you need the backplate, washers and nipples only. The existing top and bottom brackets on your mb must be removed.

Thanks, what do you think I should do with the original equipment?

Hang on to it. If you ever sell your board, you can keep your Zalman and reinstall the old hardware back to original condition.

Make sure you have the right nipple length. The 754 nipple is shorter than the 939. What version of the 7000 do you have? Is it retail?

I wonder if it was glued using double sided tape or the real "glue".

If it was double sided tape, you can remover it by heating the backplate&tape up using hairdryer, and using a paper folded into depth of 4 or 8 piece, pry it slowly and gently using a big flat screwdriver and using the paper to protect the board from the screwdriver. I remove mine by that way.

If you want to use it with the board's backplate, use some creativity to ensure the height of the "made up nipples" and the same as the zalman's, as well as make sure it is sturdy enough to hold it in a long period of time.

The long screws were just as long as the Zalman supplied nipples + screw, but there was like 1.5 CM of exposed screw, if hit, could probably cause some damage, cause the cooler wouldn't budge, neither would the backplate, so it might take the mobo out with it.
I have a retail 7000B-AlCu, it comes with the right size for 939. And it was real glue, just some twisting and it came right off, it was a metal backplate glued onto a black adhesive support thing, I just stuck the zalman backplate onto it
