So I'm moving out of apartment and into a house with a bunch of my friends. I'll be bringing my viewsonic hdtv lcd from home home and want to hook up a decent dvd player (progressive). I currently have an xbox with 4 controllers, halo 2, dvd kit etc. I also recently got a modchip for it. I was going to use it as an entertainment center for my room (since it will output games in hdtv and dvds in progressive). Should I keep my modded xbox and run emulators, divx, dvds off of it or sell it and get the xbox 360 premium pack. I know the xbox 360 can play progressive without a dvd kit or modchip. Only problem is that it will be costly to rebuy everything. I'm already kinda leaning towards keeping my old stuff to save money but the 360 looks so damn sleek. Just wanna see some opinions on the matter.

How about both? Selling a used XBox wont offset the cost of a 360 that much.

Halo 2 on XBox != High Definition.

In fact hardly any games on normal xbox are in high definition.

But if you get a 360 and run halo 2 on there, it'll be in high definition.

I would say wait till after E3 to decide if you want a 360 or not. I've had a blast with mine since day 1, and I still have my xbox hooked up to watch divx and xvid TV eps that I miss, but I've began to lose some faith in the 360 due to mine breaking and delays coming about every week for games being pushed further back.

Well with all my accessories I should get atleast $200. Meaning I'll be paying about $200 just for the premium package :frown:. But it'd be better long term since the xbox is now obsolete. Also, halo 2 does output in HD on the original xbox, I saw it on the back of the box. I just will miss that game and few others if I switch.

Is the xbox 360 backwards compatible?!

Edit: it is!

I hate nintendo btw, never liked the games that were released and I have zero regrets about not buying their systems.

I guess just to have a cool looking system, newer games, better graphics, nice wireless controllers, progressive dvd and game output w/o mods, backwards compatibility (halo2), keep the system longer.

Mod your case.

newer games
Xbox isn't dead yet, and I'd wager there's still plenty of A-rate titles you haven't played yet.

better graphics
Gameplay > Graphics.

nice wireless controllers
Okay, I'll give you that one. Best controller ever.

progressive dvd and game output w/o mods
Yours is already modded, and 90% of games do at least 480p.

backwards compatibility (halo2)
I'd say your existing Xbox is pretty "backwards compatible" with Xbox titles.

keep the system longer.
It's only as old as you let it get. /unpauses his Dreamcast

You've already got enough "Bling Bling, Impress your Friends" from the LCD TV. Don't overdo it. :p

True true, probably won't mod my case though. Will all my games be playable on my tv since some don't have hdtv output. I don't think the original xbox can upscale everything like the xbox 360 can right.

The 360 is same same old crap as the regular xbox with fancier graphics and a higher price tag. Play the Wii for a (hopefully) new gaming experience.

No it doesn't. It outputs in 480p.

even though my xbox is hooked up still, i haven't used it to play an xbox game since I got my 360 until 2 weeks ago ... when my 360 broke and I just wanted to play somethin on live, so I put halo 2 in.

so say a game I have doesn't support progressive (480p). Will it still output to the tv since I have it hooked up that way?

Yes. Hooked up with component cables doesn't mean it can't support games that aren't 480p.

but I think like 95% of the games support atleast 480p. I had my xbox hooked to my DLP via component cables for like a year before the 360 came out, never had 1 problem.

I am insane!!! I just returned everything that I bought. Decided that I wasn't the impressed with the 360... will now wait for Wii or PS3. I feel better now! :)

DEFINITELY keep that Xbox. I'm not sure the 360 has enough next-gen games out that make it worth it. The only thing I see in it is being able to play Xbox titles in HD possibly with AA.

The fact that its modded or being modded is a huge reason to keep it.

Trust me, you'll want it as a killer game machine (considering you got 4 controllers... sports games and party games like Fuzion Frenzy are a blast on drinking nights) and as a cheap HTPC. My roommate has a modded Xbox and its pretty much the center of entertainment. Yeah we got PCs that we game on but if we are all downstairs in the living room, his modded Xbox has tons of games, streams video, pictures, and music from all of our PCs.

For how cheap they are, Xbox is still an awesome machine. There's still good games coming out for it too. I'd move in with the modded Xbox and see how all of your roommates like it, then decide if you want a 360.

edit: And yeah nearly all games support 480p so at least it won't looked strethced on your LCD TV since it will be 720x480 (won't look that great, but from normal viewing distance you won't notice pixelation much). And I forgot to agree that the emulators are a huge reason for having the modded Xbox too. Now I go to a technical school so theres lots of CS geeks, but pretty much anyone can't deny how awesome a modded Xbox is. There's something for everyone (Xbox games, thousands of classic games via emulators, DVD playback w/ retarded MS kit, divx/xvid/any video format playback, mp3 playback, FTP server, etc x100)

Finally, theeres wireless controllers for the Xbox anyway. I don't see the hype. Whenever I play over at my buddies Xbox w/ Live, he always hands me his Logitech wireless. I swear its not as responsive in Halo 2 or Far Cry as the wired. And even if it was perfect as a wired one (some brands may be), I don't notice ANY advantage at all while I'm using the wireless one. It's like there could be a wire there anyway and I wouldn't have a preference either way.
