My son has a really hard time not surfing YouTube when's he's supposed to be doing homework. I'd consider taking the laptop & phone away, if he didn't require them to do his homework due to his disgraphia.

My ASUS RT-AC66U Router lets me block Internet access by device and time or it lets me blacklist websites, but I can't blacklist sites by device.

It would be great if I could blacklist YouTube just for him.

Are they any firmware upgrades that might give me more control? Are there other options?

I'm somewhat a noob when it comes to networking.

Thanks.

Have you looked into Windows Parental Controls or OpenDNS?

If he's not computer savy, just add YouTube to his HOST file and loop it back to 127.0.0.1

Just be aware that if you edit the hosts file like others have suggested, it's a 24/7 setting. I got the impression from your post that you only wanted to block youtube when it's "homework time," in which case you would need to do it at the router level.

Look into putting DD-WRT on your router. The RT-AC66U runs a dumbed-down Asus branded version of it out of the box, the full firmware is much more robustly featured and I'm pretty sure it can do what you want.

Thanks. I'll check that out.

Any danger in bricking the router by doing the update?

Sophos UTM with group based site filters, assign XX minutes or a WINDOW of time for access to youtube.com

then have an admin password that can override the time or window limits if there is necessity.

It's a great way to learn firewalls and next-gen firewall functions - very easy to setup folks in various group and assign restrictive filters.

Plus you can ban porn sites altogether.

You can try check out WorkExaminer. It works on Windows and can track internet activities of your son and block any websites, apps or programs you want.
