Need some virus/subseven/XP help from the ATers

Like a bozo, I let my virus definitions get out of date, and Norton found backdoor.subseven and backdoor.subseven215 (while running XP in safe mode) after updating. Before (and after) updating the definitions, when I booted, I got the XP start-up screen where you click on a user name to begin and there were NO usernames. Only option was to shut down and re-start in safe mode. After quarentine of the 3 infected files, I went to control panel/user accouts and the only accounts were "Administrator" and "Guest". I disabled guest, and set up a new account called "Me" as an administrator -- the limited access radio button was greyed out. Now XP goes straight to the desktop upon restart...no log in. Of course all of my settings are now different, software installed under my old account is missing, etc.

Is there any way to reactivate my old user account or am I totally hosed?

Thank you.

Just to clarify, I need to get my old profiles back that have disappeared (not the new one called "ME").

If the above suggestion will do that, I will need some more guidance (as I said before, I'm a bozo).

Thank you.

If the Trojan DELETED your old PROFILE, then you are out of luck.
(you can check in DOCUMENTS and SETTINGS \ <USERNAME> to see if it still exsists)

If your old PROFILE is the ADMINSTRATOR Profile, then you can copy
that to your NEW (ME) Profile by doing the following:

Go To
Control Panel \ System \ Advanced
click on User Profiles \ SETTINGS

Then simply select the Administrator Profile and click COPY TO
and choose the ME Profile.

If was not the Administrator Profile, there is a way to recover it, if the profile exsists,
but it is little a more involved.

Thanks a ton. 🙂 I think I'm making headway. I tried to copy Administator to Me, but got an error. Then realized that I really needed to copy the old Me to the new Me. That has returned all of my data that I feared was gone. Strange though, not all of the things are the same...i.e. the desktop wallpaper is different, Windows Media Player acts like it has never been run before, etc. Is there some way to get all of the settings back? Not that I really care about the wallpaper, but I don't really know what else might be missing.

Also, for the old profiles for my my wife, etc., I assume I just make a new one and copy the old one to it, right?

Get Anti Trojan, Virus apps like McAfee, and Norton are really meant for viruses, even thou they do pick up Trojans from time to time,
In fact most people don't even know what a true definition of A Trojan is a. Truen trojans are a RAT, not a virus
( Remote Administrative Tool ) Gee where do you think you got 'Remote Assistance from in XP 🙂 It's borrowed technology from Trojans.
Get yourself a copy of a good trojan scanner, cleaner never rely on a virus scanner to do that job.

Hey can I get a job around here ? hehe

Yes. You are correct.

The issue with some settings not being picked up is due
primarily to REGISTRY SETTINGS (system specific) not being exported with the profile.

You are better off just re-tweaking the settings then messing with the Registry.

You've been a huge help, LiLithTecH. Thanks a bunch.

Am I safe to now delete the "old me" folders under Documents and Settings to free-up HD space? I assume that I just doubled all of my data when doing the COPY TO function.
