so i just reformatted my roommates insprion b130 laptop(windows xp pro), it had alll sorts of viruses malware spyware etc. i got every driver installled and when i install the networking driver it installed and then says driver not installed in a little pop up menu in the bottom left corner. the wireless programs were installed because it has the wireless option thingy in the bottom right corner only thing is, when it searches for networks, i keep hitting refresh and its not picking up a single one. also there is no ? next to the networking menu in device manager so its leading me to believe the driver is installed because the software for it is on the bottom right hand corner.

everything worked fine on the laptop before i formatted it and reinstalled windows. i got every other single driver to work, i have even tried installing the driver from different websites, and i get the same issue, my roommates leaving for her homeland Barbados tomorrow morning and i was doing this as a gesture of good faith cause shes a great person, if any body could help me it would be greatly appreciated, thanks and god bless.

Some computers have a wireless on/off switch on the computer. Most Dell computers do.

So look on the side there should be a slider. If the slider moves one direction then all wireless devices are off if you see a red dot. Slide it back the other way and it will cover the red dot. That will mean wireless is on.

Also look above the keyboard. There may be a wireless icon that lights up next to the battery charging indicator. Looks like a cell tower or something. If it is lit up then wireless should be running.

Some of those older laptops had numerous different wireless cards.
Does Dell's website have alternate wireless NIC drivers you can try?

Also try Fn+F2 to enable/disable the NIC. (google said to try that)

Go to device manager and make sure the card is enabled and working. If that doesn't help then uninstall the driver, restart the computer, and reinstall it. Make sure you have the correct and latest driver for that card from the manufacturer's website.

can someone help me find the correct driver, cause apparently i don't have it.

again its a dell inspirion b130.

thanks.

and i tried fn+f2 and it disables the wireless (you know the theee bars in the bottom right hand corner where it shows all thye programs that are running), it looks like the bars on a cellphone for signal strength when i hit fn+f2 it put a red x over it which im assuming is disabling it, i hit fn+f2 again and the red x went away so im lead to believe that everything should be working properly, only thing i can think i did was install the wrong driver....

Have you tried entering the Dell service tag ID into their support site to see if you can get the correct driver that way?

edit: Beat to it.

They should still have the drivers on Dell's website.

Get the service tag and there you go.

right click the network places icon and go to properties. You should see all your network cards. Go to the View menu and change the view to the detail view.

You should see the status of the wireless network card. If you right click it see if Enable is listed as an option. If so then choose enable. If it says disable on the menu then it already is enabled.

Those drivers are the correct drivers based on the service tag. You can always try a Ubuntu live disc to see if the problem follows the hardware between OS's...

Try not to get to frustrated, that thing is old school anyways, if you get more than 3 years out of a prebuilt, you got your money's worth.
