Hey guys,

I was looking to upgrade my old AGP system and I found some cards on newegg that I was thinking about getting. I currently have a BFG 6800OC GS. I was wondering if I would notice a big different using one of the cards below, and if so which one would be the best bang for the buck.

First one is a 7800GT 256MB Link

Or I was thinking, maybe more RAM would be nice - 7600GS 512MB Link

Just looking to breathe an extra few months out of my system before I upgrade the whole thing.

what are you using it for? assuming gaming either will be an upgrade. i would lean to the 7800 as 512 is not really used on that card (unless you run 1650x1080 or higher, might make a diff then)

Also take a look at a x1950 class card, a x1950pro 256 should be about the same price as that 7800 and is probably a faster overall card

edit - 7600 would be about the same as that 6800, 7800 would be an upgrade as would be the 1950

Yes, its pretty much just used for games, right now I run WoW at 16x10 wide screen and its great, but since the expansion came out they added some more details to the world and I get some slow down occasionally. The new crop of RTS games have also taking a toll on the performance.

I wanted to stick with nVidia but if ATI is faster in this case I might take a look at it.

Thanks for the info.

i think you will find the 1950 a better card if you can find it at the same price as the 7800. I too prefer nvidia, but some ati cards are too good not to seriously consider

edit - i was running WOW at that res on a x800xl and it wasnt that bad and that card is roughly equal to that 6800. got at least 1gb ram? that makes a big difference in WOW. I did just build new machine so 4gb and 8800GTS, 640mb rocks at that res.

Its normally smooth, and great but when I enter Shat its not as smooth. Also when tanking Murmur in SL he does that air thing, since im right in front of it I get a big lagged out.

My main concern was Company of Heroes and other new RTS, I want to run it pretty high, but its too slow. I'm one of those people that wants it on max settings :) Unfortunately my system isn't cutting it anymore.

I was going to just build a new system, but I thought I might be able to squeeze some more time out of this one for a few hundred bucks.

P4 3.2
Intel 875PBX (dont think overclocking is an option)
2GB of RAM
BFG 6800 256MB, factory OC, not the GTX version
2x 74GB Raptors
Audigy 2 something or other.
460W PS
WinXP Pro

I got a lot of the items for free from an old job, or I would have probably went a different way on the motherboard.
