My mom went out to Target and bought a Sony Brava 32" LCD with HD and HDMI...
I was telling her that with the price range can get a better TV...

What are options... she spent $1.5k on it... it still requires speakers I think

Also the price tag will go up with new funiture

I'm looking at this but the couch is close to the TV since we have a cheap 21"

Er, if your couch is close enough to the TV, 32" is plenty. I have a 32" Westinghouse, and I sit around 5' away, and it's fine. And LCD = DLP. Maybe your mom wants a flat TV opposed to a big set?

As for the brand, the Sony Bravia is good. It's pricier then most, but it's good. http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/sr...07348?%5Fencoding=UTF8&asin=B000EDACDI

Is that the TV? If so, you don't need speakers. You can always return it if you want and just get a cheaper one. Look online for Westinghouse 32" LCD. Not the HIGHEST quality, but still damn good. I got mine for less then $700 refurbed, but they sell at Best Buy for ~$1K.

That Samsung 56" 1080 DLP is an excellent deal for $1829, $700 less than the 2006 50" model sells for.

You will need a new stand, since this is much wider than a 21" tube TV even though it's light (around 80 pounds) and shallow (about 19").

Edit: but yes, at 5' distance a 32" is probably big enough if only about the same size as the 21" for 4:3 standard definition programming.

A 32" widescreen TV at 4:3 is appx. the same size as a 27" non-widescreen TV.

D'oh! you're right, a 42" 16:9 is roughly a 32" 4:3, but I got lazy and just subtracted 10 from each :)

Within minutes I found out that the LCD was onsale and she paid retail

She claimed that the sales guy said it was on sale.
I'm trying to reason what her money is worth.

I've heard a lot about Westinghouse but my mom is driven by the talk of brand name.

I showed her the samsung and claims that it isn't a good brand

My two personal favorites, not regarding cost, are Sony and Samsung. The Sony she has is by all means not a bad set, and it's actually one of the best LCDs out, but it's just a bit expensive for one woman watching TV.

Does she have an HD source?

Negative... crappy Comcast
The connection sucks. Because the wiring and system is very Old.
I live in a town house and all the wiring goes to a probably two decade old box and wiring.

Sometimes neighbors get free cable when the other neighbor pays
because it is just flipping a switch or something to the labeled apartment

RCN has a few year old setup...

Can someone post some Hot Deals?

Honestly, I wouldn't get any LCD then. For that matter, you don't want a DLP either. SD sources look like complete sh!t on a HD set. I'd really try to do whatever you can to get an HD source in the house.

SD sources look fine on my 42" Panasonic HD plasma.

Maybe for you, not sure as hell not for me. SD looks like complete ass on both my 32" Westinghouse LCD and 50" Sammy DLP.

Well, once you get used to watching HD, SD does look a lot worse. ;) Kind of like when you popped in an old VHS tape after seeing DVDs.

That said, I think the OP needs to let this go. If my mom came to me and asked me to help her find a deal on a new TV, I would. But if she bought the TV on her own and she's happy with it, let her enjoy it.
