Hi all,

Ok here it goes.

Friend had an emachines desktop. Power supply fried the mobo a year ago.

I replaced it with a new mobo and power supply and reused everything else.

It worked fine until last week.

1. When turned on all fans spin (ps, hsf) THE HARD DRIVE DOES NOT. No boot.
2. Tested it with a known good Hard drive and THAT TOO DOES NOT KICK IN.

Tested with a new power supply. Same thing. I did strip everything down to just the barebones and still no boot.

The optical drives turn on. I attached the molex from the drive to the hard drive and it still does nothing.

Mobo dead? Processor dead?
Unfortunately I neither have a processor or another mobo to test.

Any help would be great.

Thank, Leigh

I'd disconnect everything but one stick of ram and the HD and see whether it boots. If that works then, yes, it's the power supply. Was the HD clicking or exhibiting any other signs of failure when it quit?

Have you tried a different HDD cable? What about switching the HDD to the IDE channel the optical drive is on (assuming they are on different channels)? Or, if the HDD and optical are on a single channel, how about moving the HDD to a different channel (assuming one is available)?

The suggestion to start up with the bare minimum as suggested by tno would be another thing to test.

Post will find most memory/cpu/video errors. If you're not even getting to a post then the board or PSU is probably toast. Drives don't run through the board for power so they should still spin up if it was just a dead board... probably have a PSU issue.
