This is on my mom's computer.

She has a Compaq Presario that she mainly uses for business bookkeeping purposes. It's a Celeron 333mhz, so not the newest. She has had the same Windows 98 SE install for two and a half years and it's starting to eat itself. I was going to help her get all of her files off this onto burned CD-RWs (we installed a 24x CD burner a few months before) and then reformat and reinstall everything.

Well, My Computer nor Device Manager show that the burner is installed anymore. This is the only CD reading drive in her computer. We don't have any other way to get the data off, so I need to have the CD burner reinstalled onto this installation. The problem is that I have no idea how to go about doing this... Add Hardware Wizard didn't find anything, and the QPS support site didn't have anything. By the way, the CD-burner is a QPS Que! 24x10x40 burner.

Her computer is also in Compatibility Mode for her C: and D:, and she is in compatability-mode paging. These messages show up in the Performance tab in the System properties via Control Panel.

I think that's about it, but I need immediate help if possible. I'll be checking this thread so if you have a question, I'll get you an answer soon. If you've read this far, I appreciate it and hopefully you will be able to help me.

Thanks again!

If the C: and D: drive are in Compatibility mode, it is probably disabling the 2nd IDE channel. However, your first stop is to check and make sure the PC's BIOS sees the drive. If not, you have a problem with the drive, the secondary IDE channel, or the connection between the two.

If everything is fine hardware wise, you have to go back and look at the software configuration of your IDE controllers. It sounds like you need to fix the driver problems there.

Weird... under Device Manager there are NO IDE controllers that show.

I'm going to restart and see what I find in the BIOS. I'll be back.

Maybe it is a problem with my startup config?

Here is the Autoexec.bat:

@PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~4\OFFICE;%PATH%
C:\ESSAUDIO.COM -BLASTER
@ECHO OFF
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1

c:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\NETWOR~1\VIRUSS~1\40~1.XX\scan.exe c:\
@IF ERRORLEVEL 1 PAUSE
PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\PAGEMGR\IMGFOLIO;C:\PAGEMGR

--end--

and here is her config.sys:

DEVICE=C:\ESSAUDIO.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS
DOS=HIGH,UMB,AUTO
FILESHIGH=100
BUFFERSHIGH=40,4
rem - By Windows Setup - DEVICEHIGH=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CPQIDECD.SYS /D:IDECD001
SHELL=C:\COMMAND.COM C:\ /P /E:2048
rem ..
