Probably costs a fortune, but I figured asking couldn't hurt. Any suggestions?

Looks like Cricket may be just what I was looking for. If anybody has any other suggestions though, I'm all ears :)

Cricket's OK if you live and or travel in their coverage areas - they are weak in So. Calif. Arkansas is not bad except in Central Ark. They are probably the cheapest.

I checked their coverage maps and, if they're at all accurate, I think things will be fine - my friend's not *entirely* out in the middle of nowhere: she's doing an internship at the World Bird Sanctuary in St. Louis, just a few miles outside the 270 loop. It's a paid internship, and includes living quarters on the sanctuary grounds for the duration of the work. There's no good way to access the internet from that little cabin, though - other than, hopefully, this.

Using a laptop card or a phone you can tether, you can get it for $20/month from at&t, no contract. Get a go phone, activate, and add at least $20 to the account. Call 611 from the go phone and add unlimited media net which is $20/month. The put the sim in a laptop card or tether via usb or bluetooth and surf away! Theres huge threads at both howard forums and slickdeals that go into detail about it.

Just one caveat: from Cricket's website (I'm guessing it's similar with other carriers?):
Throughput may be limited if use exceeds 5GB per month. Internet browsing does not include: hosted computer applications, continuous web camera or broadcast, automatic data feeds, machine-to-machine connections, peer to peer (P2P) connections or other applications that denigrate network capacity or functionality.
