Need some suggestions for a hardware and os upgrade

I'll be doing a small upgrade on my system in about 2 weeks. I'm currently running an Athlon 700 w/256 mb.

I would like to replace the motherboard, the case and maybe upgrade the memory. I'm hoping I can get all three items for less than 200 if possible, if not I'll just settle for a new mobo and case. I need a case and power supply that can handle 3 or 4 harddrives and at least 2 or 3 cd/dvd drives.

Any suggestions

Oh I almost forgot, whats the best OS for running games. I prefer not to use Windows XP tho

thanks for any help

if you won't use XP, I find Win2K runs GREAT for games.. when i switched from 98 i noticed the frames went UP when running 2000.

I am very impressed with 2000 and how it runs games and everything.. I can definitely recommend win2k pro for this.

my case suggestion would be for an Antec case, with a 300 or 400W PSU.. they are great value and those PSU's they include are great quality and can take the abuse. - I have the Antec SX1030B which originally had the 300W PSU, but I swapped that out with the 400.

BAD-ASS looking case and now with a TON of power.. you can get the 400 included with the case for like $30 USD more, it's the SX1040.

as for your other questions, I'm not sure if you can upgrade the motherboard being as it looks like you are running on a SlotA CPU.. good lucking finding a slotted Athlon based board....

I've been kind of debating if I should just upgrade my wifes old Pentium with my Athlon and get myself a new mobo and cpu. If I can get a good case for about 30 bucks maybe I'll try to go that route.

Ok new scenario, how much would it cost to get a fairly good Athlon cpu and mobo with about 512mb of memory? It does'nt have to be the fastest cpu but something thats still powerful enough to run the latest games.

Well, if you go to Pricewatch it actually lists all the prices of CPU and memory and such.
simply type in whatever you want, and it comes up with prices and retailers in order from prices lowest to highest.

Take a look. I recently did a PC which was a Duron 1000 and a GeForce2 MX400 64MB and it runs most games just fine.. I'm surprised your 700 doesn't! but i guess it's good to use that to upgrade the other PC and look for better stuff, for yourself. 🙂

for around $200 you can get an Athlon XP1500 and a Shuttle AK31 motherboard.
if you want 512 MB of RAM in there instead, you can go with a Duron 1000, a Shuttle AK31, and 512 MB of RAM for around the same price, if not less, the Duron has a low price of 55, and the 1500 has a price of 107.

First off, we need to know if your Athlon 700 is a Slot A or Socket A processor. If a Slot A, then forget about upgrading you memory to DDR without changing the processor. If it's a Duron 700, then there are a lot of choices.

If you have a Slot A, I would recommend the following:
ABIT KA7 and additional 256MB PC133 SDR RAM
ANTEC KS or SX Case with at least 300 Watt PS

If you have a Socket A, I would recommend the following:
Shuttle AK31A Rev 3.1 and Crucial PC2100 256MB DDR RAM
ANTEC KS or SX Case with at least 300 Watt PS

If you do have a Slot A Processor and want to upgrade to DDR Memory, the get a Thunderbird Processor and use it with the above board.

I prefer Windows 98SE for gaming, but if you thinking about using Windows XP, your better off with Windows 2000 Pro.
