anybody know any particular models that I should look at? I'm looking for something with built-in video, and would prefer an micro-ATX board, but ATX will work too.

Nope. Just a file server. But it will be located offsite once it's up and running - in my parent's basement, rather than in my own apartment.

I know linux doesn't require a lot; I'm just trying to find out what to look for - what is supported, what isn't, what boards people have tried and gotten to work without having to jump through a bunch of hoops 😛

I built a very nice machine with the Biostar 7025 north bridge:

I liked the way the BIOS sync'd up the PCs cooling fans, and then ran cool & quiet on all of them....very cool. If you are running it in a cool basement, it will turn the fans slowly, therefore little dust, etc, but, speed them up if temp goes up.

Gets decent linux marks in user reviews.
