I just impulse bought a scsi drive and I have no idea how to set it up/what I need to set it up.

Seagate 50.1GB SCSI ULTRA2 LVD 3.5HH 8.2MS 7200RPM SCA 80PIN
http://www.seagate.com/support/disc/scsi/st150176lw.html

that is the drive I have.

This is the card I plan on buying.

What else do i need to purchase to get this to function at "full LVD" mode. According to Seagate, i need:

What is required to attain LVD mode?

There are four basic requirements for LVD:

32-Bit Bus mastering
LVD SCSI Controller
LVD Termination
LVD Device

Heres another one...does it make a difference which one I get?

Well, that depends on your drive. Many drives now have passive termination as an option on the id settings. I have always used passive termination on my line up and never had a problem. Just be sure you only have a total of two terminations, one on each end of your scsi chain, keeping the terminating drive at the end.

That Adaptec card will does not support Ultra2/ LVD drives. Your hard drive will work with a 80-68 pin adapter but you will not get LVD performance. In order to get LVD performance from the drive you must have a LVD controller.

Looking for an Ultra2 Wide LVD SCSI PCI Controller Card? Well we have then, Take a look at the Adaptec 2940U2B!

Thats the 2940U2, thats what it says, that its LVD Scsi PCI controller. Is taht the one I need? I thought the other one was the same. Also, with the terminator built into the card, do I still need another "LVD terminator" as said on that seagate website up above?

Tekram also has a scsi card for what you need. I have the 2940u2w [adaptec] and if your drive doesnt support termination, then yes you will need to buy a terminator for the other end of the chain [at hardrive]

The controller card terminates itself, if the hardrive doesnt provide termination, then you have to buy a terminator for it. Tekram

does the 2940 support termination? Is tehre a difference between a regular terminator and a LVD terminator? LVD ones seem to cost alot more. Is there really a need for the LVD one?

Ya the LVD terminator will give you the maximum speed capabilities of your hardrive. Regular terminator will probably work but your HD speed will be cut in half or more etc. [depending on the type of terminator}

Look at the tekram card,

Most Controller LVD kits include a LVD terminator on the SCSI Ribbon the Adaptec 2940U2B is no exception , the tekram is also a good choice

That Card from comp Geeks is card and manuel only no cables.

Nice price though if you can find the cable/lvd terminator/80 to 68 pin adapter for a good price. Then you have to worry about gender m/f on the cables etc., and that can be tricky.

Your best bet is to buy a retail adaptec or tekram controller card. If you have a scsi hardrive, you will probably want to go scsi with cd,cdrom, dvd etc so i would get the retail package, and would allow for future upgrades

You can also get one from the Tekram Online Store for $29.95.

Internal 68-Pin Ultra2 LVD SCSI Cable & Terminator
Ultra2 LVD Internal
Supports (4) devices + Terminator
Compatible with Ultra-Wide & Wide SCSI-2 devices
(6) Connections
Rugged Construction

That's the same cable and terminator that came with my Tekram DC-390U3W (U160) card. Of course it would probably be better to buy a complete package like the Tekram DC-390U2W, which, comes with all of the cables, including the LVD cable, a regular Wide cable, a 50 pin cable, and an internal 50->external hd50 pin connector. The same things that came with my 390U3W. You can see the Tekram DC 390U2 series cards here.

I would go with the retail Tekram, either the 390U2W or the 390U3W which I just bought from Allstarshop. Good prices and good service. Get the card with all the cables for alot less than the comparable Adaptec.
