edit: OK, got network working, ignore everything below. quick question though:

with windows xp, how do you choose the WEP option you want? (i.e. choose between 64 and 128 for instance.....)

it seems to be either on or off? is it truly automatic?

Hi

I'm helping a family friend out with setting up a wireless network for their laptop.

I have an SMC barricade wireless router and an SMC pcmcia wireless network card installed on a windows XP laptop.

all wired ethernet connections out of the barricade work great (DHCP works great)

windows xp says that their is a valid wireless connection present. BUT, i cannot contact the dhcp server over the wireless network....(under statistics, it says how many bytes have been sent , but there have been NO bytes received)

any ideas??

the other thing that bugs me is when you have WEP enable in xp, there doesn't seem to be an option to choose 128 or 64 or whatever, it just does it automatically? (for troubleshooting, i also disabled wep on both sides and it still didn't work)

for some reason the stupid laptop just won't grab an IP address!

help! thanks 🙂

edit: the router lists the MAC address of the wireless card when it connects....

also, the wireless card blinks green, which according to the manual means "browsing wireless networks"...so this might be the problem? if it's fully connected, it should be constant green...but why would XP say it's connected?
