Need some quick help to resolve the host of someone who ripped my brother off.

Last year, my brother sent this guy a MMATS D300HC amp to this guy to repair. It's a $1000 amp and he paid him $100 some for labor. The guy claimed to have fixed it and then broke it during testing and said he was going to have to send it to MMATS to have them repair, but that he would do it at his expense. He kept giving my brother the runaround and now over a year later he won't respond to e-mails or instant messages and apparently has moved. I added him to my aim list and tonight he signed on. I got him to accept a direct connect and did a netstat on the connection. His host is:

ca-crlsbd-cuda3-c3a-b-101.crlsca.adelphia.net:1878

I tried pinging it, but I got a host not found error. Does anyone know how to resolve it?

What exactly are you trying to determine? Looks like he's an Adelphia customer, probably on dialup given the first part of the address. You were most likely unable to ping him because he wasn't online or Adelphia blocks such requests. Even if you could, you wouldn't find out anything more about him, except maybe his IP, and if he's on dialup, it probably changes frequently.

In my opinion, if you're wanting to find or get back at this guy, report him to his ISP (which may do nothing, but who knows) and the BBB, look him up online at switchboard.com and similar places, or report him to his local authorities. Nothing may become of any of that, though, so short of showing up on his door there may not be any recourse. :(

That's not a dialup connection.. it's cable connection. From the address, it looks like he's getting his service out of Carlsbad, CA. Although Adelphia provides dynamic IP address, it rarely changes.

I stand corrected. :) At least you know where he's connecting from, so you can check that vs. where you sent the item, and possibly contact authorities (or better yet, a lawyer) if it's worth your time.

Thanks guys. I just talked to my parents, and they said that they contacted the California State Police about a month ago. The police found his current address and paid him a visit. He gave the trooper a BS story, and the trooper told my parents he didn't really believe it, but unless we made several trips to CA we couldn't prosecute because the prosecuting office wouldn't pay to extradite him to MI. What a bunch of crap.
