Need Some quick answers...32 bit or 64 bit Vista

I am purchasing a 6000+ AMD X2 and Asus Mobo today to do a quick upgrade. I am running 32 bit Vista.

Is 64bit Vista worth buying? I need a quick response. This is actually a new computer so I have to buy a new copy of Windows as my other one is OEM. Should I go 32bit or 64bit? I need to order ASAP so I didnt have a lot of time to research.

Please give me some responses. Thanks

New desktop will only have 2GB for now.

I am not a big gamer, but like to play around with little programs, etc. I browse the web, check email and use the PC as a media center mostly. I only play games such as NHL 08, Madden, basically just sports games...and thats occasional.

Just stick with 32 bit then. You do not need more than 2 gigs of memory for what you described you are using the computer for. If you think you may want to upgrade to more than 2 gigs in the future, then ignore my first suggestion and just go with 64 bit. Otherwise, there is no point in dealing with the few compatibility issues that may arise by using 64 bit Vista.

I may upgrade to 4GB down the road, but not for a while. (maybe a yr from now)

Would that be the only reason to have 64bit? Has 64bit support become better over past 8-9 months?

That would be the only reason to upgrade to 64 bit at this point. 64 bit support is actually quite good for Vista overall. There are still some driver issues with 64 bit due to the WHQL certification requirement for signing drivers for Vista 64 bit. A few programs may have some problems with it also. The best thing you can do is go to microsoft's web site and run the upgrade adviser to see if any of you programs may have issues.

Microsoft also maintains a list of programs that are both certified for Vista and are known to work with Vista. Just take the time to do a little research first to see if what you are using will be compatible with 64 bit Vista before making a decision.

Main things check you can get 64 bit drivers and also your important software runs ok,personally I have all my 64 bit drivers and all my 32 bit software/games run fine in my Vista x64 Home Premium,so in my case not an issue at all and 100% glad I went with 64 bit version.

You can argue Vista x64 has longer life span then 32 bit version, slightly better security and no worries with 4GB limit, main downside is no 16 bit support,so any very old 16 bit software won't run in Vista x64 (you can get round that with something like Virtual PC 2007).

Its always hard to choose what version for another person ,since needs vary from person to person.

If you buy a retail copy, you can get the 64 bit media for $10 for any version other than Ultimate. Ultimate comes with both. 🙂

You can always upgrade next year or so and pay the nominal shipping fee. The key remains the same; the media is the difference.
