I was about to buy a P4 and a socket 423 mobo befor i heard about northwood and and new socket....what exactly is northwood and the new socket mobo??

the new socket is a higher pin count socket(470 pins I think) that is a lot smaller. Northwood is the .13Micron P4 that will run on the the new socket and not the old one. I would wait for intel to release the new chip and socket before putting down any money for a p4 system. You do not want to limit your upgrade path.

The new socket is 478 Pins and northwood (0.13 P IV) compatible. Intel also produces the old P IV (0.18) for this socket already.
Abit released the first 478 MoBo (TH7 II). It will hit the streets very soon. See Abit

That drop in die size should offer a performance increase and allow for much higher clock speeds.
