Need some opinions on purchasing a new car.

I have had a Honda Accord for about 10 years now. It has 171,000 miles and still going strong. I plan on giving it to my brother in a couple of months. Now, I plan on buying a new car. I was looking at the Subaru Imperza WRX. What I am looking for is some suggestions on some cars to look at. I am looking for a car (no SUV) with AWD or 4WD (since I live in New England). I am look to spend around $25,000. The car will mainly be for commuting to work ( 40 miles each way). I need a car that will be just as reliable as my Honda was. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What about the new Nissan Altima? Its around the same price as the Subaru WRX. I can't vouch for Nissan or Subaru workmanship though... Personally I would stick to Honda and Toyota for reliability.

I love my Imprezza wagon (actually Outback Sport). I have a few coworkers here ta the office who looked at getting both the 25RS and the WRX but only one of them ended buying a car and it was also an Outback Sport. The insurance killed them. Both cars doubled their already high insurances. Just keep that in mind.

if you want to stick with toyota Reliability there is a Corolla All-Trac (AWD) and Celica and even Camry All-Trac. They are a little older but you might want to give them a look.

LiQice: I would get a Honda or Toyota, but they do not make a AWD or 4WD sedan.

cavingjan: Thanks for reminding me. I will have to check what my insurance would be if I get the WRX. Hopefully having been driving for 11 years and no accidents or speeding tickets, I can get a good deal.

Captain_Howdy: What year where those Toyotas made? I will have to take a look at them as well. Thanks for the advice

Ahem, read my post please.
they do make AWD sedans and wagons and sports cars!
in fact the Tercel 4wd was the best entry level car EVER. I had one and my brother and we used to go off roading all the time. I could believe the hell we put those cars through and we were able to drive them home! The only thing that ever failed was the tires, and my front differntial but that was from Neutral Drops. My car even had 215,000. I honestly believe Toyota builds the most reliable cars hands down.

teathif: I am not sure but i think they stopeed making them in the early 90's so that may be to old for you.
My friends dad had a Corolla All-Trac wagon, they are full time 4 wheel drive and have a center differential lock for extreme driving conditions. (don't know how familiar you are with AWD systems)

Seems you've pretty much narrowed down the field on your own. Basically, you can get a WRX or an Outback. The WRX will be more fun to drive for sure, but is smaller and will carry a higher insurance premium thanks to the turbo. The Outback is less sporty, but has more room and the lower premium. Subies are solid reliabilty-wise, I have plenty of friends with Outbacks, Impezas, etc and none have had problems beyond normal odds and ends. There's just not that much else out there in your price range that meets the AWD, non-SUV and under 25k parameters. Maybe a used Audi A4 Avant, but again will carry the turbo insurance penalty.
