I'm building a couple of computers for a small elementry school. The school only wants to spend about 1000 dollars total. Now these computers are only going to be used for word processing and games for the kids.

Could any of you guys give me info on whats the best budget hardware. It's been a while since I actually built a new computer from scratch. I'm still using the "ancient" 754 technology. They don't need a monitor or keyboard and mouse.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Does a couple mean 2? If so, you should easily be able to put together two decent systems for under $500 each.

Two of each:
MB
CPU
Memory
HD
Optical
Case

That's ($60+$65+$39+$55+$39+$24+$39 shipping)X2=$642.

That's with S754 Sempron64 2600s on Biostar 6100 mbs (with integrated everything), 512 MB RAM, 80GB WD SATA HDs, NEC 3550 DVD burners in a generic tower case(PS included). All the parts are frequently used, highly user rated stuff (cheap but not the cheapest in each category) from newegg (so-so to decent prices by no means the cheapest). You can probably scale some of this down to save money if you want but you'll still have in the neighborhood of $300-400 to spend on OS, software, whatever else.
Or you can upgrade the CPU, or switch to S939 & CPUs, etc., etc. Or you could even build a third system if you wanted to and still come in under $1000, if you don't need software or upgrades.

Of course, you could do no work :p and order Dell Dimension 1100 systems with free 15" flat panels included for $429 (after rebates, not including shipping). Specs are roughly the same but w/less memory, less HD space.
