My altec lansing 2.1 speakers have finally died after 8 years!!!!

I think I may want to step up to a 4.1 setup at least to a 5.1 setup....

I want quality but not uber expensive.....I would like 85+db S/N ratio...when I listen to it I like it loud with no distortion...

Any ideas on the brands to get???

I have 5.1 built into my MF3 ultra mobo so I want something to take advantage of that...

o_O I got my X-530's for $37 on Newegg (plus $12 shipping :p). They sound pretty nice, they look uber-l337, and they're pretty cheap. I don't know how the sound quality would compare to Altec Lansings or something, but my ears aren't very picky and can't really tell the difference, so I like my X-530's a lot :)

I know this is more than you want to spend, but I got the Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1s, and they are AMAZING.

!!!!!!!!

I got the X-230 (i dont want a 5.1 setup)...and the X-230 are just plain amazing....i know the X-230 sub and sats are the same....those speakers are outstanding for the price ...the X-530 must be at least as good and then 5.1

i did some research before i bought them ($28 shipped, lol)...also had some 5.1 sets to consider...some altec lansing sets and some other 5.1 sets which were WAY MORE....and i read some negative points regarding the altec lansing (eg. lack of middles etc.)...while i NEVER read anything negative regarding the X-530/X-230 (except the inky dinky mesh they have over the sats)

I just went from Altec 2.1's to Logitech Z-3's. If you really want a quality upgrade, go with the THX certified z-5300's. MUCH more power, clarity to burn, and basically just a whole lot higher quality than the x-530's. Except for the 5.1, you won't notice much of a difference in the x-530's, unless you just aren't that picky. You may be able to compare their sound at a local retail store if you're unsure.

5300s will definately get you louder play.

I know you said you think 4.1 or 5.1, but if this is monly music listening, a 2.0 or 2.1 set would be ideal.
For movies though, a 5.1 set would definately be preferred.

You could get Klipsch Promedia 2.1s in your budget if you decided 5.1 wasn't important to you. The quality should be better for music.

I second this...the Klipsch 5.1 Ultras are very very nice speakers. They are not cheap, but they are worth it and well built. They can get very loud without distortion, great bass...just great speakers. They are more of an investment and if you spend a lot of time listening to music or if you watch DVD's in 5.1 (or want to) in your PC then they will serve you well.

If you don't want to spend that much...they yes the 5300's are nice too.

Are you talking about Promedia ultras too? Over double budget = small amount? :p

Then might as well get a HTIB, then might as well get separate speakers/receiver/sub, then might as well get a "real" sub, nicer speakers, nicer receiver..... it never ends ;)

Not to say that promedias aren't a good idea though :D

well no, but theres a decent range of klipsch:)

might as well spend right or not at all. 150 dollars of junk is still 150 dollars out of your wallet...
