Hi,

Im trying to set up a home ethernet network in my house. I have seven ethernet cables running from my basement to several rooms. I have three questions:

1) what do I need to use to connect the cables in the basement? I probably need a wireless router with 8 ports, but I havnt been able to find one. 2) Do patch panels work also? 3) Can I use more than one router on a network?

Thanks

You will need to connect the cables to a switch. Like you mentioned, you can use a router since they come with a built-in switch (extra ports). Commonly routers only have 4 ports. You can just buy your router and a seperate switch for the extra ports.

A patch panel alone will not work.

You can use more than one router but it is unecessary for a home network in most cases.

For long run use solid core cables punched into Keystones Jacks, and then use short commercial made patches from the walls to the network devices.

Keystone Jacks can be found on line and at your local Home Depot.

Great advice. Make an investment in a gigabit switch, if you plan on moving any large files. The boost is significant.

I think that having patch panels etc is a fantastic idea if you plan on adding more network ports later, but for 8-12 ports, it's not really necessary IMO. Just wire it up straight to the switch.

unless theres a chance you may move the whole shabang to a different area in the basement. those cables wont stretch too far, a patch panel on the wall for the long runs makes it easier to move your router/switch/access point around easier.
